Chapter twelve

The Breakfast Club

Eli, Zian and I dragged ourselves into the Tombs at the crack of dawn. I could hear and smell breakfast cooking in the back, a welcome thing after the day and night we all had. Tommy gave us a big grin from the counter as he put away his wiping rag.

“Well, as I live and breathe,” he said. “I was wondering if you ate human food like the rest of us mere mortals, Gamer Boy.”

Zian flinched at the mention of his heritage. I gave Tommy a warning look and headed off any unpleasantness by asking, “Anyway, can we get L’s tab to buy all three of us breakfast?”

“For another five mornings,” Tommy confirmed, waving us towards the booth. “What’ll it be?”

“Ham omelet, sausage biscuit, and orange juice,” I said, stretching my arms.

“Just blueberry oatmeal for me,” Zian said.

Eli gave the question some thought before saying, “I would very much like some biscuits, chicken and as much coffee as you can spare.”

“Well, how about a pair of chicken biscuits and a bottomless cup of coffee?” Tommy asked with a smirk.

“That sounds wonderful.”

“Then take a seat and we’ll have it out lickety-split.”

My body was glad to stop walking as it dropped into the booth. I sighed and rubbed my face. Thanks to my late-night nap, I wasn’t tired, but I was still sore from my second swan dive of the night. Plus, while Eli might be too polite to bring it up, landing on garbage also made me smell terrible.

The breakfast crowd was still an hour from getting in, so we had the place to ourselves for the time being. I couldn’t think of a better time or place to go over our findings.

“So,” I said to Zian. “You’re sure about that pattern on the dress being a rough match for that brand on Sarit’s chest?”

“As sure as I am about wiping the CCTV feeds of you after the fire,” Zian said, rubbing his boyish face in exhaustion. “There was nothing I could do about your first visit though, as these were already with the police.”

I nodded. “I’ll worry about it later. The dress?”

“Extrapolation from the sample you gave me shows it to be a 99% match to the pic.”

“But would that pattern work as well as the brand we saw?” I asked Eli.

“On clothing or skin, the pattern would still accomplish its intended purpose,” Eli said with a sad expression on her face.

“And don’t forget those stones went all the way through the fabric,” Zian added. “They’d be touching the skin if anyone wore it.”

“Alright, what about what was written on the document?” I asked my client. “You sure it—”

“Truthfully, I almost wish I was not,” Eli said. “But the words on that paper made the situation extremely clear. The souls of the workers we found were used to help create the magic on the dresses.” He frowned. “The script was slightly unclear on one point. It spoke as though only a certain part of the soul was being extracted for such a purpose.
