Chapter Twelve

They drove through the village in silence. Shaun struggled to control his breathing, just like he’d learnt all those years ago on his travels. His yoga master had told him to live in the moment, but if Shaun had a choice, he would prefer to live in the past these days. The here and now didn’t have much to offer him.

So much had happened just in the last half an hour. His body seemed to be rejecting it. He didn’t think he would ever forget that face in the doorway. The enjoyment on the lad’s face made Shaun’s blood run cold. How could anyone get a kick out of violence? The lifestyle or the money he could almost understand, but that man had been desperate to get in the room with them. Then what would have happened? It didn’t bear thinking about.

Once again, he found himself in a car next to Enzo, struggling to come to terms with another attempt on his life. This felt sickeningly familiar. His jaw throbbed where he’d been slapped but it was nothing compared to his ego. He’d had every right to be outraged about the incident at the Christmas markets. He didn’t have that luxury this time. He had brought all of this on himself.

The car bumped over a pothole and jolted him back to life. His trouble wasn’t over yet. In fact, the events at Becky’s would be nothing once the truth got out at the farm. Once more he would be the weakest link of the chain.

“Will you tell Marco?” he asked.

Enzo considered it for a second. “It’s going to be pretty hard to hide it.”

The bright red mark on his neck where he’d almost been choked to death would be there for all to see. Shaun thought he might burst into tears.

“Your poor neck,” he said miserably.

Even though he felt as low as a worm’s tit, he desperately wanted to ask Enzo why he’d kissed him. But he couldn’t bring himself to. Enzo glanced at him as they turned off the main road onto the farm track. If Shaun didn’t know any better, the same question was on Enzo’s mind too.

“You weren’t to know,” Enzo said.

Shaun reached over and placed his hand on Enzo’s leg. “Thank you so much, Enzo. You seem to be making a habit of being my knight in shining armour. I do appreciate it and you.”

Enzo looked at him but left it a fraction too long and the car veered off the track. They had quite a drop to the side so Enzo had to wrench the wheel to get the car away from it and back under control.

“Maybe we should talk about that another time,” Enzo said.

“Good idea,” Shaun replied.

Another near-death experience was absolutely not on his agenda. Although once Marco found out what had happened, even Enzo might have trouble defending him. Poor Liam had a one-way ticket to being caught in the middle of him and Marco once more and he didn’t even know it yet.
