A Hierarchy of the Heart
* * *
Within your deepest heart, you and I commune and share everything. It is from the original heart-mind that conscience is molded, logic is enlightened, the emotions are guided, and all is put into proportion.

DURING a recent visit with a friend, Takeko, you were touched when her eyes filled with tears as you shared some of the experiences you have had in your communications with Me. This young woman has a beautiful heart, but she is suffering, as so many people in this world are suffering. She truly wants to work and live with Me day by day, but as in so many cases, worldly duties and responsibilities seem to be in conflict with her heart’s great longing. She is afraid that if she follows her heart she will be violating the rules of her religion.
Her example brings up a number of questions: What is the purpose of the external structure that religion offers? Why do you need an external structure if you just follow your heart? Be reminded that every religion in history was originally intended to inspire and help people reconnect with Me. Some religions have said that the Kingdom of God is far beyond any single individual’s capacity.
Isn’t it clear that without individuals having a connection with Me we will have no Kingdom? The individual is the key. How and where is that connection to take place? Is the connected individual one who studies, memorizes, and knows all of the doctrines of his faith and who can stand proudly in front of thousands, spouting those doctrines? Not necessarily. Many such people have led immoral, secret lives behind the scenes, apparently unable to take to heart what is in their minds.
The path to this connection with Me does not lie in intellectual knowledge, however deep the convictions of a preacher may be. So many religious leaders have had knowledge of the doctrines and strong, emotional conviction about that knowledge, yet they still hungered for something that all their intellectual knowledge could not give them. And oftentimes they have tried to satisfy this appetite in ways that have only created a greater distance between them and Me. You can imagine the so-called “sins” that have proliferated as people have tried to satisfy their spiritual appetites in these misdirected ways.
Your lovely friend cannot be satisfied with doctrine and obedience to a certain code of conduct dictated to her through religious structures. Though it may once have served her, she can no longer be happy with just that outer structure of knowledge. She longs to have her heart filled in a whole new way.
In your church there was a term you often used—the “hierarchy of heart.” This applies to an external hierarchy—where lay members look up to people of presumably higher positions in the church. Ideally there would be such a hierarchy of heart that, as you looked to these higher positions, you would find more and more love. After all, the heart should
