Chapter Fourteen
Michael jumped through the air, across the width of the room, and landed beside me. He then dove toward Alan and the wolf, which had its mouth around Alan’s shoulder, tearing at his flesh. I gasped as the butler transformed into a pale-furred wolf and slammed his body into the creature on top of Alan. Michael snarled and snapped at the other wolf, ripping into it and pinning it down. He clawed unrelentingly at the other as they rolled along the floor fighting. I struggled to keep my eyes on the wolf I knew to be Michael as their colors seemed to blend together. Both men had blonde hair, and so did their wolf forms.
Alan, wincing and breathing hard as he righted himself, looked at me. “The desk,” he said through clenched teeth.
My eyes landed for a moment on the gaping wound on his shoulder. I didn’t understand what he was trying to say or why.
“The desk, Madison!” he shouted. “Move it!”
Finally understanding what he wanted, I cast my gaze on the heavy piece of furniture. I still couldn’t distinguish the difference between the two wolves that were still interlocked and fighting. I toppled the desk with my gift. The wolf on the bottom, whose leg was being torn at by the wolf on top, looked up to see the desk coming down on them. He whimpered, stopped fighting, and began squirming and trying to scurry away. The other, oblivious to the danger, snapped after him, intent on finishing the fight.
The desk tipped over and began to fall. The wolf on top opened its gaping maw and went to bite down at the other. A sickening crunch sounded as the heavy wood slammed against the wolf’s head, crushing it and killing it instantly, as well as pinning the bottom wolf to the floor. Now, with both wolves changing from wolf to man, I knew who was who. Michael lay stuck under the weight of the dead man and the desk that had landed across his torso.
Alan ran to move the desk, attempting to lift it or push it aside despite the obvious pain he was in.
“S-stop, Master Alan,” Michael said, then screamed in pain. “There’s no saving me. I’m dying and there is no time.”
Alan stopped and slumped over beside his butler, giving him a questioning look. Michael’s eyes widened when they fell upon the wound on Alan’s shoulder, but he was interrupted before he could speak.
“Why … why did you let them in? Were you helping them …?”
Michael grimaced. “I tried to s-stop them. I didn’t know this was what they would do. After they left—after they attacked your parents—they let me live. I don’t know why. They told me to never tell anyone, or else they’d kill me. They said they would need me again, I didn’t know for what until today. When they came back this time, they told me that they needed to search the house again. That they were looking for something of your father’s.
