I sat on a bench out in the hall just outside the room where the girls were competing, contemplating my next move, when my phone buzzed. I pulled it out of my pocket, giddy when I saw Anthony’s name. He was just the person I needed to talk to.

“Hey, twice in one day. How did I get so lucky?” I said.

“You’re not the lucky one. I am,” he said, and I smiled at hearing his voice.

“I’m glad you called. I have some things I want to tell you.”

“Me too. So do you want to go first or should I?” he said.

“You go first.”

“So I did some digging, and it seems Priscilla Aikey didn’t trust her husband because she hired a private investigator to follow him.”

“Really?” Not that I didn’t believe him. It was just so hard to imagine being married to someone you trusted so little that you would hire a private eye to spy on them. I knew if I felt I had to go to such lengths, I just wouldn’t want to be married to that person. I guess, each to their own.

“Yep. On three separate occasions over the five years they have been married, she had him followed.”

“How do you know this?” I asked.

He chuckled. “I can’t give you my secrets, or else you wouldn’t need me anymore.”

Now I had to chuckle. I enjoyed his playful banter. “So, what does it mean to you?” I said. “Could she have decided he was so untrustworthy she should kill him?”

“Well, not necessarily; however, she also must have quite a temper, because a previous husband of hers filed charges against her.”

“Charges for what?” I asked, curiosity eating at me.

“Apparently, she threw a vase at his head.” That statement made me pause. If she couldn’t control her temper, what else was she capable of?

“Did they say why she threw a vase at his head?”

“No, just that they had some sort of altercation and the police were called to their home. Her ex said he wanted to file charges. All that happened was she had to pay a fine and take some anger management classes,” Anthony said. That seemed like quite a big deal to me. Based on my brief interaction with her, I could see that she might have anger management issues. I guess those classes didn’t pay off, I thought.

“Are you going to call Detective Bailey and tell her this?” I asked.

He started laughing. “No detective likes interference from a fellow detective from another area who has no business in their investigation. Besides, I’d be extremely shocked if she didn’t already know this information.”

“Speak of the devil,” I said and watched Detective Bailey walk by me as she was talking to someone. She glanced in my direction and frowned before walking a little farther away and stopping, continuing her conversation. She kept looking over her shoulder at me.

“What?”

“She just walked by me. Anyway, why do you think she’s still after Hillary?”

“Abby, how do you know whom she suspects?”

I guessed he had a point.
