There are adherents of the tree-focused approach that translate the word hadar as “etrog” instead of “beauty .” The earliest commentators to do so interpreted hadar midrashically; that is, they looked for a hidden, non-plain-sense meaning of the word in order to understand the Bible’s true intent. The first interpreter to have purportedly taken this approach was Aquila of Sinope , a convert to Judaism in the second century who translated the Bible into Greek. Only fragments of Aquila’s translation have survived, such as the following snippet preserved in the Jerusalem/Palestinian Talmud, which was compiled and edited from the fourth century onward:Rabbi Tanḥuma said, “Aquila translated hadar as hidur [= ὕδωρ, “water” in Greek]. [Peri ‘eṣ hadar therefore] refers to a tree that grows ‘on the face of the water.’” (Jerusalem/Palestinian Talmud, Sukkah 3:5 [53d])
