The Black Hawk War was fought in 1832 in what was then the Michigan Territory, today’s state of Wisconsin. The war was called the Black Hawk War after a war chief named Black Hawk, who fought with the British against the US Army. He was chief of the Sauk, Fox (Mesquakie), and Kickapoo tribes. Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis distinguished themselves in the Black Hawk War, which helped their political careers. The war began on May 14, 1832, and ended in August of that year after a victory by the US Army. Gen. Winfield Scott signed a treaty with the Indian tribes to end the war. This photograph is from a painting of Joc-O-Sot canoeing on the Cuyahoga River. After fighting in the Black Hawk War, Joc-O-Sot made his way to Cleveland and began leading hunting and fishing trips. He died at the age of 34 on September 3, 1844. His gravestone reads, “The Walking Bear A Distinguished Sauk Chief.” (Early Settlers Association.)
