Chapter 8

It was the second week of January before he found the courage to go and see her. He had been battling with himself ever since the party and trying to decide what to do. Then he had convinced himself that he needed to do what is right! She was carrying his son! He quirked with fear at the uncertainty of what that entails but he needed to see her for his own peace of mind. He called her.

“Eric.” Her tone was cool and professional and he knew he deserved it.

“Could you meet me for lunch?”

She paused and then responded. “When?”

“Today at the usual place. At one.”

“Okay.”

He waited a beat and then asked her. “How have you been?”

“Fine.” Her answer was short and stilted as if she was talking to a stranger and one she did not particularly liked.

“Good,” he floundered, not knowing what to say. “I will see you at one.”

He hung up and stared down at the phone in his hand. He was going to have to convince her to let him become a part of the child’s life! He pressed his intercom. “Gertrude, please cancel my one o’clock.”

He was waiting for her when she got there and she saw him got swiftly out of his seat and come forward to pull out a chair for her. She was wearing a black wool dress that stretched over the bulk of her belly and knee length boots. It had snowed last night and the snow was piled high on the ground. She had allowed her hair to grow somewhat and the fringes against her cheeks and at the nape of her neck gave her an appealing look. Pregnancy suited her very much, he thought suddenly. She took off her gloves and placed them onto the table.

“What would you like to eat?” he asked her as the waiter came forward.

“Clam chowder, please,” she told the hovering waiter.

“The same for me.” Eric waited until the man had left. “You look healthy.”

“Thank you.” Her smile was polite and distant. “What do you want, Eric?”

He looked at his hands on the table before looking at her. “Let’s eat first,” he suggested.

“Fine.” She took the glass of water and drank some of it. “I take it Gertrude is still working out?”

“She is excellent.” A small smile lifted his lips. “She is very efficient and anticipates my needs even before I do.”

“Good.” She nodded and looked at him. “I saw the apartment building. It’s very nice.”

“Full occupancy,” he told her with a smile.

“So off to your next project.”

“I have already begun. A derelict hotel in the adjacent neighborhood.” He stopped talking as their meal came. The conversation stopped as they ate the delicious clam chowder. He waited until their dishes were taken away before he spoke. “I want to be a part of the child’s life.”

Bianca stared at him for a moment and then leaned forward. “Why?”

He looked at her startled. “I am his father.”

“You do not want children. You made it painfully clear.”

“A child deserves to know who his father is.
