CASSIE REMEMBERED ABOUT Betsy as soon as she got on the school bus. She burst into her house, determined to make her mom drive up to Betsy’s house.

Her mom was at the dining room table, putting stamps on envelopes.

“Mom,” Cassie began, all fired up, “Betsy wasn’t in school again today. But it’s more than that. I talked to her teacher, and Ms. Roxi doesn’t know where she is. No one’s coming to get her homework. Something’s wrong. We have to go out to her house.”

Her mom didn’t look up from the envelopes the whole time Cassie talked. Cassie waited a moment.

“Mom?” she said again.

Finally Mrs. Jones looked up, and Cassie was startled to see that her eyes were red.

A warning bell went off in Cassie’s mind. “Is everything okay?” she said slowly. Her mom crying was never a good thing.

“Cassie, I got a call today.” Mrs. Jones took a deep breath and exhaled. “It’s about your friend.”

“Betsy?” Cassie asked, her chest constricting.

“Yes. She’s in trouble.”
