âStop,â Sangster said, as they approached it.
âWhat is it?â
âThereâs somebody on the porch.â
âFrankie Trigger?â
âI donât think so,â Sangster said. âWhy donât you take a walk to Old Town and Iâll come and get you when Iâm done here.â
âDo you want my gun?â
âNo,â he said, âI wonât need it.â
âDo you know who it is?â
âI think so,â he said. âIâll see you in a little while.â
She turned and headed back toward the Old Town Bar, while he continued on to the house. It wasnât totally dark out. He spotted the car in front and had an idea who was on his porch. As he went up the walk, he saw that he was right.
âThere you are, Mr.â¦Stark,â Detective Telemaco said.
âDetective,â Sangster said, stepping up, âwhat brings you here?â
âThe other night, when I was here, I said weâd talk again,â Telemaco said. âI just thought Iâd come around and have that talk. That is, unless youâre busyâ¦again?â
âBusy?â
âWith your girlfriend?â
âI donât have a girlfriend at the moment, Detective,â Sangster said, sitting across the chessboard from him, âso Iâm free to talk. Whatâs on your mind?â
Telemaco nodded. âSo sheâs not your girlfriend. Fine. We wonât argue the point. What was her name? Roxy?â
âThatâs right.â
âSo I thought Iâd come back, catch you alone, and give you another chance to explain why you rang me.â
âI told you,â Sangster said. âI made a mistake. I overreacted.â
âNow,â Telemaco said, âI think you and me, especially after Vegas, know that you never overreact to anythinâ, Stark.â
Sangster studied the man, then said, âI bet you can use a beer.â
âI can always use a beer.â
Sangster went into the house and returned with two bottles, sat back down across from the detective. The few extra minutes fetching the beers had helped him decide how to play the situation.
