“Stop,” Sangster said, as they approached it.

“What is it?”

“There’s somebody on the porch.”

“Frankie Trigger?”

“I don’t think so,” Sangster said. “Why don’t you take a walk to Old Town and I’ll come and get you when I’m done here.”

“Do you want my gun?”

“No,” he said, “I won’t need it.”

“Do you know who it is?”

“I think so,” he said. “I’ll see you in a little while.”

She turned and headed back toward the Old Town Bar, while he continued on to the house. It wasn’t totally dark out. He spotted the car in front and had an idea who was on his porch. As he went up the walk, he saw that he was right.

“There you are, Mr.…Stark,” Detective Telemaco said.

“Detective,” Sangster said, stepping up, “what brings you here?”

“The other night, when I was here, I said we’d talk again,” Telemaco said. “I just thought I’d come around and have that talk. That is, unless you’re busy…again?”

“Busy?”

“With your girlfriend?”

“I don’t have a girlfriend at the moment, Detective,” Sangster said, sitting across the chessboard from him, “so I’m free to talk. What’s on your mind?”

Telemaco nodded. “So she’s not your girlfriend. Fine. We won’t argue the point. What was her name? Roxy?”

“That’s right.”

“So I thought I’d come back, catch you alone, and give you another chance to explain why you rang me.”

“I told you,” Sangster said. “I made a mistake. I overreacted.”

“Now,” Telemaco said, “I think you and me, especially after Vegas, know that you never overreact to anythin’, Stark.”

Sangster studied the man, then said, “I bet you can use a beer.”

“I can always use a beer.”

Sangster went into the house and returned with two bottles, sat back down across from the detective. The few extra minutes fetching the beers had helped him decide how to play the situation.
