Jordan parked the car and stared at the grove. The night was dark, and the streetlights nearby were off. Deliberately vandalized or never fixed? Given what the grove was sometimes used for, no one probably cared, but it meant that when Jacobs and Boyle had snuck down to start a fire, they’d also had the cover of night.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt less in the mood,” Jordan said as he got out of the car. It didn’t help to know that Boyle’s body was buried somewhere there.

Edra sighed and then drew in a deep breath. “Can you smell that?”

“Smell what? Smoke? People?” He scanned the grove but saw nothing in the deep shadows. During the day, it had been pretty and inviting. Now there was a vibe that he couldn’t quite place. It wasn’t threatening, but it wasn’t inviting either.

“Come on. Clocks ticking.” Edra inclined his head at the grove.

“Not helping.”

Edra flashed him a grin like he was enjoying this. The moment Edra stepped off the concrete, he took off his shoes. “I know this scent. I haven’t smelled it since…” He closed his eyes. “The forests would be filled with it once a year.”

“What?” All he could smell was flowers. And he was sure it was the same as both times they’d been there. The scent of growing things and life. Fresh shoots and decomposing leaves.

“Mmm.” Edra took a few steps forward, pulling him deeper into the grove. Jordan glanced back at the car and pressed the button, locking it.

They moved deeper into the grove until Jordan couldn’t see the street. He was sure that he’d been able to see both streets from the middle, yet tonight it was too dark to see anything. It was like being lost in a forest, but Edra pulled him on, and Jordan followed, still not knowing how he was going to do what was needed.

The last time he’d done something this risky, he’d been full of Bliss, and they had been in the satyr temple where being naked was more acceptable. That they’d had a dragon watching their backs had also helped. That he had gotten completely naked with Edra in the temple now seemed like some kind of dream, as that wasn’t like him at all. Yet that is where they’d sealed their bond.

Tonight, he was sober, and his gut was telling him that this was a career-ending move if he was caught. It would have been life-ending if Edra hadn’t made the deal, though.

Edra’s fingers brushed the trees as though he were looking for something. “Can you smell it now?”

“I can smell flowers.” Like walking into a florist where a hundred different scents mingled.

Edra tugged off his shirt and dropped it on the ground as though he was ready to get right to it, then he pulled Jordan close. Their lips touched, Edra’s tongue teasing his lower lip. Jordan opened to him and let the kiss deepen. His hands skimmed over Edra’s bare skin, trying to find the desire he knew was trapped within the knot of worry.
