Chapter Twenty-One

O ver dinner, I casually mentioned that a group of kids from school were meeting at the Polar King to hang out for a while. Of course, I got the usual third degree, but since I kept to the basics, I got through it without so much as a fib. I would meet Zane at the Polar King, other kids would most certainly be there, and Zane and I would definitely hang out.

I was getting pretty good at this lying-by-omission thing. The fact that I wasn’t proud of it helped a little in maintaining my self-respect.

After dinner, I helped Mom clean the kitchen, then I changed clothes and headed out the door.

“Don’t be late,” my mom called from Dad’s office. “It’s a school night.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it,” I hollered back, then skipped out the door and took off before they could change their minds.

Zane waited in his Charger, parked in the lot behind the ice cream shop. I pulled up beside him and glanced at the clock before I killed the engine and the lights. Eight on the dot. Nobody could ever say I wasn’t punctual.

He rolled down the window on the passenger side as I locked up the Bimmer. “Get in,” he said, and if I hadn’t had Werewolf hearing I wouldn’t have been able to hear him over the music blasting through some serious woofers in the back of his car.

I tried not to get fluffled by the order, but he had a way of getting on my very last nerve. I did as he requested, though, and he took off without another word.

He drove in silence for a few more minutes, then turned the music off as we approached the site where the first attack had occurred. Conservancy Road was a stretch of black asphalt with tons of curves and more than its share of trees and dark places for bad guys to hide. The fact that they’d found Jenny out here was no surprise. The place was just screaming to have a B horror movie filmed there.

Zane veered his Charger into a pull-off area on the side of the narrow road and cut the engine. From there, we had to hike the berm to reach our final destination.

My black sweat shirt and dark jeans were an accidental choice in wardrobe. I had a feeling Zane had put a little more thought into it, but his outfit was pretty much the same as mine. No need to advertise ourselves should anyone drive by, but really, the odds of that were slim and none.

The Panoptic had dumped Jenny’s body in the ditch, just around the second bend up ahead, a bit of a walk, but I didn’t mind. It was a nice night, cool, but not freezing, and I was out with a handsome boy. If I didn’t think about it too much, I could actually have enjoyed myself.

We didn’t get within twenty yards of the place before the smell of blood pulled me out of fantasyland and planted me firmly back in reality.
