Chapter 9—Maddox

INSTEAD OF GOING TO the store, I place an order with the app to pick up in an hour at one of the twenty-four-hour grocers in the area. Bracing myself, I drive back to my apartment to face Lara before bringing home Jessica.

She’s standing in the foyer when I step inside, and she looks pissed. “You’re back. Good. Now explain to me how the hell you’re the father of your best friend’s wife’s baby, who is currently growing in her best friend?” Her eyes narrow. “Did you cheat with her? Or with Jessica? Were you going to pass off your cheat baby as theirs?”

I roll my eyes. During my absence, she’s clearly created some wild theories in her mind. “It wasn’t like that. Holt and Anya were having trouble conceiving, and they asked me to help. I agreed, and they did IVF with my sperm. Jessica is the surrogate.”

“Why the hell would you agree to that? It’s so weird. And why didn’t you tell me?” She crosses her arms over her chest, glaring at me.

“Because it was none of your business. It was between me, Holt, and Anya. I helped them because they were my friends, and I was trying to do the right thing.” I sigh. “I was never meant to be the father, Lar. I was going to be Uncle Maddox, and I was totally fine with that. You don’t want kids, and I didn’t either, so I...don’t know. Maybe it was a bit of a selfish way to pass on my DNA, but it seemed harmless. In fact, it was positive, because it helped the man who was like a brother to me. I thought I was doing the right thing.”

“You still should have told me. I had a right to know.” She frowns. “Now you have a baby coming, and I don’t want one.”

“You don’t have to be involved. I’ll take full responsibility. I’ll hire a nanny and everything.” I run a hand through my hair. “Look, I’m sorry. I fucked up. I thought it was the right thing to do at the time, and I didn’t think it would come to this.” I don’t tell her I have no regrets about the decision—just how it turned out, making me and Jessica parents instead of Anya and Holt.

“I don’t like your seed germinating in some other woman’s body. You had to know I’d hate the idea.” She pouts.

“I didn’t think you’d care, because you never wanted children.” I shake my head. “This is a terrible time for this conversation. I have to go pick up the groceries and bring Jessica here. She’s on bedrest.”

Lara glares at me. “What do you mean, you have to go pick her up? Why is she coming here?”

“Because she needs to be on bedrest, and I’m not leaving her alone. She doesn’t have anyone else, and she’s my responsibility. She’s carrying my child, and I’m not abandoning her.” I hold my ground, refusing to back down.

“Your child? It’s hers. She’s the surrogate.
