Chapter Sixteen

Rob came in late and found her hunched over her computer at the table. A small meatloaf sat on the stove with a pot of rice and a plate of sliced cucumbers nearby. She looked up when he kissed the top of her head and set his things down on the spare chair. He picked up a plate and loaded it up with food, before coming back and sitting down.

“Anything interesting?” he asked between bites.

“Mm. Yes. A couple of things. There’s a missing person case that sounds intriguing. May require some travel. And one that involves a plane crash.”

“Where?”

“Tupelo.”

“What? The birthplace of Elvis himself?”

She chuckled. “Yeah. Site is in a field. The family aren’t satisfied with the NTSB report.”

“So…they want you to talk to the pilot?”

“Yes, essentially.”

“Well?”

“Well, while I’m waiting for things to happen with Reggie’s case, I reckon I should take on a couple others.”

He swallowed a bite and nodded. “Makes sense. A little distance might help you see things more clearly.”

“There is that. I feel like I’m missing something obvious.”

He put the last bite of meatloaf in his mouth and stood with his plate. He rinsed it off and set it in the dishwasher, then started putting the leftovers away. Jenna typed a couple of emails and then closed her computer.

Rob looked up. “You’re putting away the computer?”

“We have to talk wedding. Your mom needs some information and I don’t feel comfortable giving it all to her without talking to you first.”

“I’ve had my input. Halloween. Mom and Dad’s backyard. I’m done.”

“Uh, no, you’re not.”

He yawned and stretched, then sat on the couch and said, “Fine, but I’m sitting here, where it is comfortable.”

She got up and followed him, sitting beside him.

He draped his arm about her shoulders and grinned. “There, now we can talk.”

He kissed her and she struggled weakly for a moment. “Rob… We need to plan what we’re going to wear.”

“I have a few ideas on that,” he said, his mouth traveling down her neck.

“Rob!” She laughed and pushed against him. “I’m serious.”

He sighed. “I am, too. Jenna, I don’t care. You tell me what to wear and where to stand and I’ll do my part.”

“That’s not fair, leaving it all to me.”

“I always heard that was every woman’s dream—to get to plan her wedding her way.”

“I never thought I’d find someone I’d want to marry. So, this is all new to me.”

“Ok. Well, how about we just go kind of traditional? I’ll wear a suit and you wear a dress. You already ordered one, right?”

“Okay, yes, but there’s more to it than that. A little more detail…”

He shrugged. “I don’t know… What’s your favorite color?”

“Cobalt blue.”

“Okay, cobalt blue flowers for your bouquet, matching tie for me. Some plain black suit for me, simple floor-length dress for you. Are we done?”

She sighed, but the image was starting to clarify in her mind. “Yeah, I think I can work with that.”

He kissed her and grinned. “See? Nothing to worry about.”

She smiled back. “There’s always something to worry about.
