Luke and Kabelo combined to subdue the man, who did his best to wriggle away from their grip.

“Easy, brother, easy!” Kabelo said.

Attracted by the commotion, a waiter and the restaurant security man came up to them.

“What’s going on here?” the security man asked, his hand on the baton hanging from his waist belt.

“We’ve got it under control,” Luke said.

“We don’t want you to have it under control. You need to take it outside,” the security man replied.

Luke knew he had to de-escalate the situation. The restaurant had nothing to do with his quest, so he and Kabelo led the man outside. They led him to an empty street bench and sat him down, sandwiching him between them. Discreetly, they kept a hold on his arms to prevent him from escaping.

“Why are you following me?” Luke asked.

“I’m not following you,” the man replied.

“This isn’t the time to try being smart. Remember, I chased you down the street a few days ago?” Luke said.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” the man replied, straight-faced.

“Does FZ Marketing ring a bell?” Luke asked.

The man shook his head.

“You better start cooperating, wise guy. I know a little about the streets and I can tell you’re hiding something. That’s not the safe thing to do,” Kabelo warned.

“I have nothing to tell you,” the man said.

Luke’s eyes narrowed. There was something about the man’s voice. Luke took out his mobile phone, scrolled for a few seconds, and dialled.

A phone rang with the ringtone of a bleating sheep. It came from inside the man’s trouser pocket. Luke lowered his phone as his eyes met the man’s shocked gaze.

“You’re the guy who called asking for Victor. Well, it’s now time to tell me why you were looking for him.” Luke said.

The man inhaled. “Okay, you’ve got me. First, I wasn’t following you. I wanted to find Victor.”

“Why did you want to find him?” Luke asked.

“I owe him some money,” the man replied.

Luke and Kabelo exchanged glances.

“Money for what?” Kabelo asked.

“It was a loan. Vic always gave me loans when I needed them,” the man replied.

“So you’ve been looking for him in order to pay him?” Luke asked.

The man nodded. “He told me to look for him and make sure I find him. Or else.”

“Or else what?” Luke asked.

“Or else I’d experience some pain,” the man said.

Luke raised a brow. “Are you talking about him hurting you?”

“Yeah. I didn’t want to face that again,” the man said.

“Again?” Kabelo posed.

“He sprained my arm last year, took a while to get it back right. Didn’t want to guess what would happen this time,” the man said.

“What’s your name?” Luke asked.

“Chris. Chris Bala.”

“Chris, what was the money for?” Luke asked.

“Gambling. I’ve lost some money to that,” Chris replied.

“And how long have you been doing this with Victor?” Luke queried.

“Two and a half years now. He’s really come through for me,” Chris said.

Luke’s gaze drifted away to the street in front of him. He wasn’t seeing the passing cars, for his mind replayed the
