Carley

I’m sitting on the cot with my laptop on my knee and Peanut sleeping next to me. He’s snuggled into the warmth of my leg, and every now and then I run my hand over his ears, the softness soothing me.

I look at the blank screen of my laptop. I’m trying to write a report for work, but my mind’s drawing a blank.

Ever since my date with Emmett, I’ve felt unsettled. If I close my eyes, I can still feel his hands on my waist and his firm lips against mine.

I push the memory aside and try to focus on my report.

There’s a knock at the door downstairs, and I hear my sister open it. I’m trying to stay in my room and out of her way as much as possible. It’s hard enough that she has three kids to look after.

“Carley, it’s for you,” she calls up the stairs.

I toss the laptop on the bed, startling Peanut. “Sorry buddy, probably a delivery.” Although I can’t remember ordering anything.

I head downstairs, pulling up my baggy sweatpants. I’ve gotten sloppy with my appearance, and it’s been two days since I showered. Which makes it worse when I get to the door and find Emmett standing in the entryway.

“Hi,” he says awkwardly.

I run a hand through my hair and silently curse my sister for letting him in and not warning me. But there’s the sound of a screaming toddler coming from the living room, so I can’t be too hard on her.

“What are you doing here?” I pull my cardigan over my faded t-shirt and suck in my stomach.

I’m usually proud of my size, but even a body positive curvy girl knows she doesn’t look her best in a pair of oversized sweatpants.

He holds his hands up placatingly. “Just hear me out.”

There’s another toddler scream from the living room, and then the baby starts crying.

Emmett’s brow creases. “Is everything all right in there?”

I nod. “Yeah, it’s just my nephews. Don’t worry, my sister has it under control.”

As if on cue, the screaming toddler turns to laughing toddler, and the baby stops crying.

I shrug. “See. All good.”

He chuckles, and a piecing feeling goes through my heart. God, I’ve missed that lopsided grin.

“I would invite you in, but they’re about to have lunch and it’s not a pretty sight.”

“Can we go for a walk?”

I’ve got a ton of work to do, but his eyes are pleading. I shrug. “Sure.”

I grab a pair of shoes and my coat, and we head outside. It’s a residential street with wide sidewalks, and he falls into step next to me.

“Carley, I can’t stop thinking about you.”

I open my mouth to speak, but he holds a hand up to silence me.

“I had a really nice time with you. And I know you felt it too. If there’s something holding you back let me know, and maybe we can work through it. But I’m not giving up on you without knowing the reason.”

We come to a small park and go through the gate.
