Chapter 20

Kieran’s fingers danced across the screen of his phone as Scheredin glanced up at him.

“Everything okay?” asked Scheredin.

“Renny and Rorie just tried to convince me you should sacrifice a tiny portion of your soul to give them a pet phoenix,” Kieran replied.

“I never imagined I’d say this since Renny is about the only person on the planet that can keep Dra’Kaedan from spiraling into madness at certain moments, but he might be a bad influence on Rorie.”

“I told them they can marvel at a phoenix from the backyard whenever I shift.”

“How’d that go over?” Scheredin asked after getting a soft kiss from Kieran.

“Renny wanted to know if he could pet me. I told him my feathers are on fire.”

“They’re cool to the touch.”

“To a phoenix’s mate,” Kieran firmly stated.

“Okay, that’s pretty kickass.”

“We need to talk.”

Scheredin nodded and swung his legs around to cross them as he settled comfortably against the pillows of their bed. “Yeah, I know. I was texting Brex to see if he could join us.”

“I know you guys are firmly convinced this is a bad idea, but I hope you’ll listen and not spend the entire time reinforcing each other’s opinions.”

“We won’t gang up on you,” Scheredin said. “This affects Brex, and he needs to be a part of this.”

“Agreed.”

“Why are you sitting at the table?” Scheredin asked. “There’s plenty of space next to me.”

“Because all I keep thinking about is sinking my fangs into your neck while I’m buried in your sexy ass, and if I sit next to you, we’ll wind up scarring your familiar for life.”

Scheredin chuckled and shook his head at his mate, who offered him the grin that would probably forever make him want to jump Kieran. There was a knock at the door, which prevented Scheredin from falling into a haze of lust, and Kieran jogged over to answer it.

As usual, Kieran greeted Brexton with enthusiasm, and once the pair had hugged, they grabbed chairs at the table. Deciding that it was weird to be across the room, Scheredin rose and joined them.

“Kieran looks serious,” Brexton observed.

“I’ve been thinking about this,” Kieran remarked. “I’ve spent weeks now at D’Vaire. I might not have understood the entire Fate thing before I arrived here, but everything is different now. There are all kinds of cool things that mates discover about their pairing if their connection is solid. Look at Del, who named his familiar Greggory, then met his other half and discovered his name was Grigori. The twins had dragons who mirrored their mates’ beasts, and while Renny’s dragon changed after he met Rorie, the fact that his other half had an animal tied to his soul was still another clue.”

“I agree, Fate gives us cool things. She’s awesome at her job,” Scheredin said, which earned him a kiss.

“What exactly does that have to do with me?” Brexton asked.

“You’re Scher’s familiar and are tied to his soul, so every important decision in his life is intrinsically tied to you,” Kieran replied. “Scher
