CHAPTER 13
As I got close, I could hear him playing the guitar and singing â he was rehearsing again! I crept closer and noticed that his door was open; just the screen door on the trailer was closed. I discovered that if I stood at an angle, I could watch him.
He was singing âAll Shook Up,â playing the guitar, and shaking his hips and dancing at the same time. No wonder they called him the King! He really was the King of Rock and Roll. It was just like one of his movies I had watched on our TV.
We used to have an old black and white TV at the trailer, but eventually the picture tube had burned out, and Clarice had said, âWell, so much for that old thingâ and unplugged it and lugged it out for garbage pickup at the side of the road, where all the residents put out their trash cans once a week. Andy El didnât have a TV, so it was something that I had only faint memories of watching. But I do remember seeing an old Elvis movie, with everyone dancing on the beach. And, peeking into his trailer, I sure thought he looked just like the Elvis Presley from that movie.
When he finished the song, he put his guitar down, wiped his brow with a scarf he had around his neck, and took a drink of water from a glass on the table. I gave him a few minutes and then knocked and waited for him to come to the door.
âWell, hey there, Truly,â he said when he saw it was me. I acted real casual, so that he would assume that I hadnât heard or seen him rehearsing. I had told him that I could keep a secret, and I wanted to prove that I could.
âHi, Mr. Kingsley, I talked to Clarice â my mom â and sheâs done those costumes already, so she says you should head over anytime this afternoon to bring her the repair job,â I said. âSheâs going out later, so she said even now is fine with her.â
âWell, thatâs just great.â He beamed at me. âI can just grab my jumpsuit now, and you can take me over and introduce me to her. Give me just a minute.â He disappeared into the bedroom of the trailer and came back with his dry cleaning bag.
My heart sank. I could sure keep a secret, but Elvis didnât seem to care about being discreet at all. Here he was, about to march through the whole trailer park carrying a dry cleaning bag with a flashy jumpsuit.
I braced myself and led the way over to our trailer, so I could introduce him to Clarice. I was relieved to see that no one else was outside, so no one was there to see Elvis with that classic Elvis Presley outfit. Otherwise, it would have been a dead giveaway as to his identity.
I opened up our trailer door and called out, âHey, Clarice, Mr.
