“I need to get some gear from the alley up there, but after that I’m all yours,” I continued, then turned to look at Mihaela. “Don’t feel constrained to join us. You can go and get a hotel and wait for me to–”

“Absolutely not.” Her voice was swift and sure. “For all I know, you will get crushed by another building and leave me with no leads to follow.”

“I beg your pardon, but this building falling on us was entirely your fault,” I pointed out.

“No,” she said, “it was the fault of whoever put the explosives there in the first place.”

She had something with that, not that I was going to let her know I agreed with her about anything.

“And I am sorry for my part in it,” she added, “but right now you are my only chance at recovering my bloodstone shard. I can’t risk you getting hurt.” Or leaving me behind, the unspoken words went, but I read them as clear as day off her face, dusty as it was.

“Well, I guess you might not be completely useless,” Misty said, not exactly putting a shine on it – but then, that had never been her way. “Even if you are a tourist.”

Actually… “Give me a moment to place a call home and get my backup guns,” I said to Misty.

She heaved a sigh. “Fine, but hurry it up. I’ve probably already lost out on the snake-bear because I detoured to save your ass.”

“Yes, yes, keep flogging that dead horse until it turns into a zombie and tries to eat your face off.”

“Get my bag too,” Mihaela called out as I headed down the tunnel to the nearest manhole.

“Not your maid,” I called back.

I ended up getting it for her, though, because I was such a sucker. I arranged for Adam to overnight me a bag containing a few things I might be needing in the upcoming days, as well as some things I’d definitely be needing, like another pair of my custom boots. Then I grabbed my second-favorite shotgun out of my weapons bag and enough ammunition to take down an octo-puffer, a snake-bear, and whatever other deranged hybrids that villainous scientist had released into the wild. I gave Mihaela an adorable pair of pistols, handed over her bag, and we
