Chapter 20

It was late January and more than two years since Jack’s father passed away. Louise and Jack struggled with their grief the first year after Sean passed. After the will reading, Louise had a mortgage-free house, and Jack took over all the business.

The fish plant worked like a well-oiled machine and gave work to about forty percent of the town. Sean had just turned twelve and started working part-time at the plant after school and on weekends. He told Elizabeth he was saving all his money to buy a car when he turned sixteen.

Elizabeth didn’t think he’d be able to hold onto his money, but he opened a bank account and kept very little of the money to spend on himself. He’d also been taking guitar and piano lessons at school, and Elizabeth had been contacted by the music teacher to let her know how talented both Sean and Kurt were.

Kurt was obsessed with Karate, and according to the teacher, he was a natural. He’d also taken up playing guitar and sang in the church choir with Sean. Elizabeth would get goosebumps when she’d listen to them practice in the house.

Kurt had entered several Karate competitions, and although she was proud of how well he did, she found it difficult to watch him fight with other boys. Every time she went, she’d have to lie and tell Kurt she enjoyed it, but that was what mothers did.

Cora was the one who concerned Elizabeth. She had this quirk where she started playing matchmaker with people around the community. The odd thing was all of the couples she’d brought together were working out. So much so that people around Cape Broyle started to call the little girl Cupid.

Elizabeth’s mother was not doing well. Her mother’s back issues had become severe and walking was almost impossible for her. Jack and Charlie had built ramps on both of their homes. It made it easier to maneuver the wheelchair into each house, which meant she could still split her time between both of her children.

Elizabeth also started a business of her own to bring in extra money. She did some seamstress work for people around the community and was selling vegetables that she and the children were growing in the garden.

It was Saturday and Sean went to spend the night with a friend, Kurt was at an overnight competition with ten other boys and Cora was with Jack’s mother for the night.

Elizabeth and Jack had plans to have a nice supper and go to the pub on the dock. Craig Colbert had taken over the small pub where most of the men used to drink and turned it into a friendly place where couples could go and enjoy themselves. Craig put the money he’d saved over the years into renovating the pub.

Fishermen’s Catch wasn’t a huge place, but there was a small dance area and a few tables where people could sit. Craig always made everyone feel welcome and made sure nobody got out of hand.
