Chapter Fifteen

We left a little after night had fallen, as soon as Sienna was able to cast enough of an illusionment charm to cover both of us. With the vamps watching the Loft now, we didn’t have to worry so much about being smelled as we did about their excellent night vision. If either of us were spotted then word definitely would be getting back to the rest of the Deathless, and that’d be no bueno for a number of reasons.

“We good?” Sienna whispered.

We crouched in the mouth of an alley across from the Loft, having dashed there from the front door.

I scanned the Loft. As always, I was struck by how small it appeared from the outside. Only a few lights were on. Ari’s room; maybe Collette. I thought I could pick out the dim flicker of Sawyer’s screens.

But once my eyes adjusted I could see the vamps.

They stuck out from the shadows like smooth gargoyles, not even trying to blend in. One was leaning in the darkness of the building next door. Another in the small garden of the office beside us. I spied the creeper vamp that liked to peer in my window hovering just outside the reach of the Loft’s improved defensive charms. I wondered if a good throw could knock him out of the sky. None of them seemed to be paying any attention to us.

“We’re good,” I whispered back.

We hurried from cover, still being sure to stay out of the light in case any overly perceptive vamps watching thought something looked out of place. The street the Loft was on had relatively low traffic, but the moment we turned onto the main road it became a challenge not to bump into anyone.

“Sorry!” Sienna hissed as she was shoved into me again. “Let’s…just…Follow me this way!”

It took a few tries, but she finally grasped my arm and tugged me out of the flow of passersby. “Hold still.”

I imagined her waving her hands. A moment later I felt a cold trickle down my neck as the illusionment charm dripped off me. Sienna did hers next until we both stood there, looking a little bumped and disheveled.

“Guess I should have done that sooner,” Sienna said sheepishly. “Though I’m not sure how many more times I can pull it off tonight.”

“It’s okay,” I said, starting to walk again, following the curve of the street. “We should stay more out of sight anyway. Who knows how many from Lukas’ pack are hanging around right now?”

Sienna glanced around and sped up.

I didn’t really think Lukas or the Deathless would have sent people to wander the city in the off chance they’d run into us, but then again, what did I know? They might be paranoid and power hungry enough to do just that. I’d have to stay on my toes.

We kept up the swift pace, diving down side streets, past pools of light emanating from the insides of shops and boisterous-sounding bars that had just opened for the night. Cars
