Chapter 12

“Young lady, I have a bone to pick with you.” Coke Ogden wasted no time to point her finger at me and shake it. “Of all people you lied to.”

“I didn’t lie to you.” I gasped and headed to the counter to get my purse. “I needed to go see Glenda.” Quickly, I pinched my lips, unsure if Coke knew Glenda lived in the woods just beyond the property she owned at the Old Train Station Motel.

I dug for my phone in my purse to send a quick text to Henry Bryant, the handyman at Happy Trails, to tell him about our impending guests and to get the empty bungalows ready for them. I also gave him the “pretty please find some wood and head down to Deter’s Feed-N-Seed to see if Alvin Deter will give me a deal on a few heaters.”

“Gee, you think I don’t know Glenda thinks she’s sneaking into the barn at night to ride Rosa?” Coke rolled her eyes and dragged the towel across the counter in front of me to clean up the crumbs from the last customer. “Rosa has been in the best shape of her life. I knew it wasn’t from the horse feed or straw I was buying down at Alvin Deter’s place. And I sure knew it wasn’t from trail rides because most people pick the younger horses.” She sucked in a deep breath, cocked her brows, and came clean. “I started to write down everything I was giving her, down to how much water she was drinking a day. I even stopped using her for trail rides because I was thinking I found the fountain of youth.”

She shook her head. “Nope. One night I couldn’t sleep because I was up thinking about it. I saw a tiny little light scurrying across the field. At first, I thought it might be a string of lightening bugs, but when it happened the next night, I knew someone was going into my barn.” She lifted her chin, and looking down her nose, she continued, “I went down there and hid in one of the stalls with my Smith and Wesson next to me. I sat under a horse blanket so the person wouldn’t see me.”

She snorted, pursed her lips, and blinked a few times before she looked over my shoulder. “I heard Glenda’s voice talking to Rosa. Then I knew it was her, so I let it be.” She gave a quick nod of her chin, gesturing me to look up.

“Thanks, Coke.” Bobby Ray was standing behind me with Abby Fawn.

“What are you two doing?” I asked.

“Well, I came out of my house to go to work, and my truck was gone. So were you.” He pointed at me with the dumbest look on his face, which was his way of trying me make me feel bad. “I had no way of talking to you because after calling you a million times, Coke here answers.”

“Oh.” I gnawed on my bottom lip, trying not to laugh.
