Chapter thirty

Phoebe

This was on The List. Something she had read about and seen on her tiny phone screen. Something she returned to often on the audio erotica app she had impulsively purchased a year-long subscription to.

Phoebe thought of herself as a good person, tried to live a life where karma would eventually pay her back, but there was something about being punished that sent a tingle through her core and caused her to get wet.

As she watched Dec peel his clothes off, she took stock of her emotions. Would she like it? Did Dec like this?

“All right, Phoebe,” he said, walking over to her and laying a warm hand on her ass. He rubbed it in an affectionate circle. And she liked that. He gave her cheek a tiny pat, and she liked that, too. “Ready?”

She thought she was.

But that first sting sent a red-hot fire through her lower half, and not the kind she had anticipated. Not the luscious ache that had occurred when her hands had been bound behind her and she had felt the strain of the knot at her wrists. Not the way she felt when she was pressed into the mattress or when Dec told her how he liked to feel her.

This was just painful.

Okay, maybe it was just the first one. But then she felt the same hot smack on her left ass cheek, even though it was balanced with the warmth of Dec’s palm rubbing where his hand had just been.

“Checking in, Phoebe,” came his voice, bringing her back to her body. Was she crying? That wasn’t sexy; that was awkward. “On a scale from one to ten, one being bad and ten being amazing, how are you doing?”

“I dunno,” she squeaked out. “Four?”

“Phoebe.” Dec could be stern in bed, but there was an affectionate undertone, the way someone would make sure you had eaten your vegetables or worn the right jacket.

“One and a half.” She sniffed. “But we can keep trying.” She wanted to be a cool, sexy girl. Someone who did cool sex things.

But Dec’s hands were immediately off her body, and then he walked around to where she was, pulled her into his chest, wrapped his arms around her, and pulled her into a hug.

“Do you need water? A warm shower?” he asked, stroking her hair and squeezing her.

“I’m fine,” she said, though she had begun to sniffle, and she had all of a sudden gotten so cold.

“Phoebe.” He repeated her name, and she began to warm slightly. “A partner’s job, especially one who is dominant, is to make sure you’re safe and feeling good. You don’t have to like things.”

“But it sounded so hot when I read it,” she said, vaguely in the direction of the set of stars on his sternum.

“I thought swallowing would be sexy, too, but I didn’t like it,” he explained.

Phoebe mumbled “it tastes horrible” into his chest.

“Learning what you don’t like is just as important as learning what you do like.”

“I like you,” she
