den woke the next morning aboard the Emma Rose. Bosco had kept watch over Madison’s place most of the night and was back at the lighthouse sleeping it off until noon. The events of last night were a reminder to Eden that no matter what, her past would always find her. Her life since joining the Israeli Defense Forces, and subsequently Mossad, had set a path that couldn’t be altered. Not that she ever wanted a normal (meaning boring) life, but she sometimes wondered if the picket fence and three kids was a safer alternative to what she’d chosen.

Then Eden would then reason that she’d be a domestic prison warden, raising inmates for the future workforce of American, and being mother to an adult man-child that would depend on her to wash, cook, clean, and nurse him. It’s one of the reasons she’s enjoyed her relationship with Tony so much. They could love and fight just as fiercely, and still not depend on the other one to cook, clean, or worry about the bills. They didn’t have to decorate for the holidays, worry about taxes, or pretend to like anyone they didn’t. It was a more honest, more liberated way of life. Yet, this freedom had a price tag, and Eden knew she’d have to foot the bill once again.

Eden plotted a course back to Eastman’s harbor. The waves outside her windows had woken her in the morning, along with the caws of the gulls. The stone archways of Baxter’s Cove still stood silent and imposing as always. They were like the skeleton of the island and seemed to be the only place that was unchanging and uncorrupted. Only the ocean and time, the two elements that created it could ever wear it away. Eden admired its beauty, as she always did, despite the violent memories this place sometimes dredged into her mind or previous cases and misadventures, only some of which paid.

Eden arrived in the harbor early. She made her way to the office and found Toothy and Bosco waiting for her. Both of their faces looked haggard.

“What’s up with the faces, guys?” Eden remarked to them. “It looks like you both pulled all-nighters.

“That’s because we did.” Toothy said, limp cigarette between his lips. “Tony thinks your unwanted visitor was connected to Wilburford. We found an ID on her, but it’s probably a fake. The name was Hilda Vanden.”

Toothy then looked to Bosco. The normally buoyant Italian wasn’t smiling. He wore a black polo shirt with white rose patterns, which he only wore to funerals. Even his trousers were solid black.

“What else is new with you guys?” Eden asked, as she went about making coffee.

“Eden, I saw an explosion last night.” Toothy said. “It was at the Elizabeth Hotel. Somebody blew up a room, it was brutal.” He paused as he lit his cigarette. “I was up half the night dealing with that.”

“What the hell is going on?” Eden asked. “The whole island is cursed. I swear to God.
