A BRIEF HISTORY OF ECLIPSE PATHS

One of Halley’s lesser-known achievements was the prediction of the path of a solar eclipse in 1715 which crossed the south of England. This may have been the first time that the movement of the Moon’s shadow across the Earth was computed. Certainly, we can take Halley’s calculation as marking the beginning of modern eclipse astronomy. In 1715 Halley managed to publicise his prediction of the eclipse path as a ‘broadside’, a single-page tabloid, that was hawked on the streets of London. He had his motives. In order to check his calculation of the path, Halley needed to collect reports from all around southern England. He had arranged for observations to be made from six points on the edges of the path of totality and from nine more within the umbra, including one from Greenwich Observatory.
