Chapter Thirteen

“What are you smiling at?”

Kate, caught out in a dream, re-running that kiss through her memory over and over again, started. “What’s that?”

“You’re grinning at nothing like a complete nutter,” Theo said. He threw a plastic folder over the table at Kate who barely caught it in time. “What have you been up to?”

“What do you mean?”

Theo grinned. “I know that look. It’s the one you get after a damn good seeing to.” He smirked and then added, “All my ladies get it.”

Kate became aware that she was perilously close to blushing. “Oh, sod off, Theo. When are you actually going to grow up and have a proper relationship, not just a load of friends with benefits?”

She became aware that she sounded a lot more defensive that she had planned to. Theo grinned even more. Kate added, “How many ‘lay-dees’ are you up to now, anyway?”

Theo looked smug. “About four on the go.”

Kate rolled her eyes. “I don’t know where you find the energy.”

“Cheeky bastard,” muttered Kate, bending her head towards the statements. Something to read through now while she waited for Olbeck. She looked up to check his office once more, but it remained stubbornly empty. Where was he? Had he told Anderton yet?

“You might also want a look at these,” said Fliss, holding out another bunch of folders.

“What are they?”

“Medical records for Jean Tripp. They were couriered down this morning.”

“Thanks, Fliss.” Kate thought of the thousands – millions – of words she’d have to wade through today and suppressed a groan. “Better get started, I suppose.”

Fliss offered to make her a coffee and Kate accepted gratefully. She was beginning to warm to the newest member of the team. For one thing, Fliss at least was not about to boast of her many sexual conquests, or Kate didn’t think so. Dismissing the irrelevant musings, Kate forced herself to concentrate on the mountain of paperwork before her.

She began with the medical records. Jean Tripp had been born in nineteen fifty-eight, the third daughter of parents who were approaching middle age when she was born. The usual childhood illnesses were documented, as was the fractured arm that Jackie Tripp had mentioned and that the post mortem had found. There was nothing much untoward in the records until Jean reached the age of twelve. Then a note of discord could be ascertained, creeping into the official jargon of
