Kenzie stood in the dim of the kitchen, watching her mum gardening from the open doorway. She was leaning over a clump of weeds, trowel in hand. On her fingers were the patterned gardening gloves Kenzie had got her a few Christmases back.
For some nonsensical reason, the sight angered her.
A kernel had been blooming in her gut since her meeting with Earlie. Now she was here, back home, with her mum in her eyeline, she all but tingled with the need to say her bit. It was rare she ever spoke out against her mum; they generally had a very agreeable relationship but she resented that now. She resented it with her whole heart.
Blowing out a breath, Kenzie entered the garden.
âMum?â
âYep?â
âIâm not going to Auntie Lynneâs.â Her hands curled at her sides.
âWhat?â Her mum looked up, squinting in the sun. ââCourse you are.â
Kenzie shook her head. âNo, Iâm not. Iâm not going.â
âKenzie, love, you are. Weâve had this planned for months now.â
âIâm not going. Just listen to me.â
Kenzieâs mum paused, straightening up. âWhy do you not want to?â
âBecauseâthereâs only a few weeks until I go to uni and a few weeks until Earlieâs holiday ends and she goes home and I want to spend as much time with her as I can.â Now sheâd said it, she hoped the frantic beating of her heart would calm, but it only sped up.
âEarlie?â Her mum scoffed lightly. âYouâve known Auntie Lynne all your life, think she comes before some girl youâve just met.â
The anger in Kenzieâs gut churned. âFuck you, Mum. Iâm not going, alright. Why donât you just fucking listen for once?â
âKenzie!â Her mumâs eyes widened, trowel limp in her hand.
âYou should probably shut your mouth before someone punches it.â
âWhat the hell has gotten into you?â Her mumâs voice rose.
âYou, for fuckâs sake!â Kenzie threw up her arms and took a step backwards. Her heart thumped hard, a headache rising to match. The churning turned to a roil. She was out of control, and she couldnât stop and she hated it and fuck it felt so good. The words began tumbling out of her. âWhy would I want to go on holiday with you and Auntie Lynne, anyway? Youâre both pathetic. Both single and lonely. Desperate. Do you know how gross it is to go to the pub with the two of you and watch you leer at guys all night? Married guys, guys who wouldnât look twice at you. Itâs fucking gross!â
âKenzie,â her mum whispered.
âWhat? It is gross.â Kenzie laughed slightly. âYouâre so damn embarrassing. I hate going out with you sometimes, you know. You never dress nice, your hair is always so bloody messy. Try and brush it sometime! Youâre only forty but you look more like sixty in those baggy dresses you always wear.â Kenzie ran her eyes over the mud-smeared dress her mum wore now, lip curled in a sneer.
Her mum was shaking her head. Her cheeks were red with anger and there were tears in her eyes.
