Dan had always been a restless sleeper and that had gotten worse since the Pulse. Back in the Before, the cases he was litigating kept him awake with worries about what he’d forgotten to do or a new idea for a defense or the right question to ask on cross examination. Now nightmares about what happened to Erin and about Mary’s suicide woke him. Mary had written him a letter before killing herself that said she didn’t blame him for Erin’s loss, but of course she had. How could she not? He’d gone to find Erin and failed. With her daughter at her side Mary could have managed her mental issues with prayer and diet and rest and stress management. So Mary’s suicide was on him, too.

He rolled over.

Sean’s mattress was empty.

The bathroom door was open, so he wasn’t in there.

Dan sat up, the covers falling off him, and checked on the Flecks. Both were still in their bunks. Not a surprise because they both fell asleep when their heads hit the pillow and stayed out through just about anything.

He threw back his covers and got up, muscles creaking, a groan escaping him. Ed called the noises Dan made, dad sounds, which Sean thought was hilarious.

Dan slept in his clothes, as they all did. He sat down on the couch in front of the fire and put on his boots. When he was done, he leaned back, staring into the coals, hands clasped between his thighs to keep them warm.

Mary and Erin were in heaven. That, he was sure of. He knew the Catholic Church said suicide was one of the most egregious sins, but he couldn’t see God sending Mary to hell for one thing done in desperation after a lifetime of good. The real question was whether Dan would join them there when his time came. He had shot someone on the way home from Iowa and killed a man while searching for Erin. What if I don’t see a priest to confess it all before my own end? Was it enough to be sorry? To repent? How did confession and repentance and good deeds and forgiveness all work together? The Lord’s Prayer said he had to forgive others for their trespasses if he wanted to be forgiven for his own.

He closed his eyes and whispered the prayer softly to himself.

“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

He kept his eyes closed and thought about Mary and Erin and asked God to welcome them into Heaven and to—

The patio door slid open. Sean, cold air swirling in around them. Two people behind him. Dan stood up and edged toward the revolver on the mantle. A man and a child. The man had something over his shoulder—a gun.
