The most common obsessive precautionary action is worry, a thoughtaction. To anticipate trouble, never to overlook any possibility of trouble, to keep such possibilities in mind, is doing something. Inasmuch as such precautionary thinking is necessarily biased, paying special respect as it does to the worst possibilities, its general effect is to live with the worst, even to assume the worst, as though in preparation for the worst.

In its more benign, less relentless, forms, this bias merely distorts realistic proportions. Often, however, new possibilities are discovered that require worry. Sometimes these are horrific, like the prospect of HIV contamination cited above. But sometimes they are only far-fetched concerns that clearly are not believed by the obsessive person himself, yet cannot conscientiously be dismissed.
