Schattner spent his entire professional life building in the tiny Baroque university enclave of Eichstätt in the south of Germany. At an early stage in his career, he had a crucial influence on the university’s expansion plans, ensuring that their strategy involved any new buildings being accommodated within the existing town, rather than in a separate, suburban campus. This was a key urban and social (some might say, un-egotistical) strategy for an architect to propose.

Luigi Snozzi proposed a similar strategy when confronted with a proposal by a different architect to build a new school at the outer perimeter of the tiny town of Monte Carasso in the Swiss canton of Ticino. He resisted the proposal by suggesting that the centrally located former Augustine convent be converted into the new school rather than building afresh. In recognising the potential for the former monastery to be adapted to a school, he was also aware that its central location in the town could transform it into the social centre of gravity for public life, which would be all but impossible with a peripheral location (it is not a coincidence that a small café/bar/shop has developed at the corner of the school providing refreshment to both waiting parents and public alike).
