Chapter Fourteen

It was almost 11:00 pm before the most frightened and most conspiratorial of LA’s transformed shifters finally left the bar. It was still technically closed for a private function—evidenced by Jim the bouncer having to turn away a group of college girls barely old enough to drink in the first place—but the transformed moved in and out at will. Most of them returned home but a few stood around to talk and kill time until they were next in line to speak to Terrence Caul personally.

Johnny and Lisa ordered a final round of drinks before they stepped through the back door and into the small courtyard behind the building. A raised patio boasted a small party tent along the rear, where the transformed who wanted more information waited in line to step inside one at a time.

“This is as weird as hell,” Johnny muttered as the line finally dwindled only two shifters still waiting patiently for their turn. “It looks more like he’s playin’ Wizard of Oz than shifter-army recruiter.”

“I’m sure he has his reasons.” Lisa leaned back in her patio chair and watched a woman emerge from Terrence’s private tent and pat her pockets before she walked into the bar. “Although I would have thought having the hounds standing right outside would have given us a little more insight.”

Seated beside the tent, Luther whipped his head up and yipped sharply. “We’re not useless!”

“Yeah, what he said.” Rex sniffed the bottom edge of the tent and trotted from behind it. “No one here says anything, Johnny—”

“Hey.” The bounty hunter whistled shrilly and lifted a finger quickly to his lips before he jerked his hand down again.

Luther cocked his head. “I didn’t say anything either.”

And we ain’t gettin’ anywhere with two hounds talkin’ about spyin’ and this whole place crawlin’ with shifters who can hear ’em.

A group of shifters burst out laughing at another table across the patio and Lisa raised her drink. “At least someone’s having fun.”

Charlie grinned and raised his glass toward her before he leaned forward and muttered something to the friends he’d arrived with and the three other shifters he’d drawn into his fun little circle.

“I don’t get it.” Johnny folded his arms and scowled at his cousin. “He’s sittin’ there laughin’ and jokin’ like he ain’t got a care in the world. But he ain’t looked me in the eye since he arrived.”

“I think that’s the point.”

He stared expressionlessly at her. “Do I need to cut you off the gin for the rest of the night?”

“Very funny. I’m serious, Johnny. He pissed you off, you pissed him off, and now he’s dealing with it in his way while getting back on this case with us so we can finish it. Hopefully.”

“His way? Darlin’, that ain’t the way a grown dwarf handles bein’ pissed off. What he’s doin’ is teenage-girl mind games.”

Lisa choked on a laugh and almost sprayed her drink over the table. “You only know one teenage girl and when Amanda’s pissed, she storms out and breaks a few things she hopefully won’t regret later.
