A beautiful sea of mahogany bookshelves glistened under the yellow ceiling lights and lined the walls of the circular building. It had been far too long since James had graced the reading rooms with his presence. Gasping for air, James paused at the top of the staircase and leaned against the stone walls. A sharp pain shot through his side. James surveyed the room while waiting for the not-so-subtle reminder of the previous night’s events to subside. He needed to lie down.

Far off in the distance, hunched over a laptop under a yellow study light, was a familiar hoodie-clad man with a Playmobil-style haircut. As the pain diminished, James dragged his weary body along the dark-blue carpet and to the empty rows of study desks. Oliver nodded then looked back at the computer. After pulling a dark-stained wooden chair to him, James sat next to Oliver. Lowering his headphones, Oliver turned his laptop screen towards James.

With a beaming face, Oliver leaned in. ‘I can’t believe this is happening. It’s almost as if I’m working for MI5, not a prestigious university.’

A rock formed in the pit of James’s stomach. Merde. ‘So, you didn’t have any trouble accessing his phone records.’

Oliver leaned back in his chair. ‘Considering Liam’s history with passwords, this didn’t come as a surprise. But this password-security thing is not a habit that’s exclusive to Liam. Most people don’t have secure passwords.’ Oliver shrugged. ‘I accessed the phone records from the library because he does come here a lot, just in case he noticed the log-in and questioned it with the provider.’

Note to self: change all of my passwords.

James bounced his foot under the table as his eyes lingered on a familiar number. ‘He contacted Dr Teflon.’

Oliver grimaced. ‘Yes, but only once.’ Oliver dragged the cursor over the phone bill entry. ‘On Thursday, the fifteenth of August, at 7:13 p.m., Liam had a twenty-minute conversation. It was exactly twenty minutes, which is strange.’

James placed his hand over his mouth and stared into the distance. Merde.

‘That’s the day after he increased Kate’s life insurance.’ James sighed.

Oliver raised his eyebrows. ‘Wowsers.’

Tiny hairs on the back of James’s neck stood on end as his heart raced. James surveyed the room, but no one was there. Oliver glanced up then leaned back in his chair and scanned the Upper Camera Gallery. A digital quack disturbed the eerie silence of the reading room. James pulled out his phone from his front jeans pocket. A message had come through. It read:

Don’t be alarmed, but I’m pretty sure someone is lurking in the shadows behind you. Be careful. xx
