Shameful Behaviour

Walking away without another word, Albert could not deny that he felt ashamed. He could not recall a woman ever asking him for help and being refused. It’s the twenty first century, he told himself. Running to the rescue of women is an outmoded concept to be left in the past, he added.

While he believed those things to be true, and also knew the safe and sensible option – the one his children would endorse – was to vacate the area and never return, he could not shift the feeling that he was being cowardly.

Walking at his side, Rex was confused. Struggling to understand human motivations and activities was not a new thing; he could rarely work out why they did the things they did. However, he felt that he had a good handle of what was happening this time.

They had come across a lady who saw a murder; he got that much from listening to what she said on the train. Then she got attacked and then they found the men who attacked her. They got away, but Rex guessed that was why they were down by the water in the middle of the night – to find them again. Why else would they be here?

However, now they were leaving, and the lady was staying behind. Was that safe for her? He nudged Albert’s leg with his head.

Albert looked down.

Rex looked up.

‘This is the right thing to do, Rex.’ Albert said the words but knew they didn’t sound convincing. ‘It’s not our fight, boy.’

Rex stopped walking. ‘I think we should go back and get her.’

Brought to a stop because Rex had planted his butt on the pavement and was refusing to move, Albert muttered some profanities under his breath and shivered against the cold – even the dog knew they ought to go back. The problem for Albert was that if he didn’t go back, he would spend the whole night fretting. Worse yet, if anything happened to Greta, even though her fate would be of her own making, he would never forgive himself.

Accepting his fate, Albert met the dog’s eyes. ‘Okay, Rex. Okay. Let’s see if we can convince her to come with us.’ Albert doubted that was even an option. He thought it more likely he would have to stay with her and try to keep her out of trouble.

The pair turned themselves around and started back toward the quayside. They hadn’t gone far; no more than a couple of hundred yards, but Greta was nowhere in sight when they got back to the shadowy spot they’d been in.

Albert squinted into the dark. To their front were dozens upon dozens of yachts and cruisers. Of various sizes, the craft’s tall masts reached into the sky – those that had a mast – but none of them looked to be inhabited. The quayside was quiet and there were no lights on.

To his left was the port with large fences erected around it. Albert doubted she went in that direction.
