Xavier pulls into Annette’s driveway with the intent of staying with her the rest of the night. Any woman would be thrilled to have a handsome Latin man take such great care of her, but not Annette. She was thankful for Xavier’s hospitality and care, but he wasn’t Duane. She had a lot going on in her head about her next steps, and Xavier could tell by the look on her face.

“You okay?” Xavier asked.

“Yes, I am better now after that shower and wonderful meal,”

“If you were mine, I would be busting down that door right now,”

“Yeah, but I’m not yours. We just work together. You know how I feel about Duane. I just need some space for a few days,”

“If you ever change your mind?”

“I know, I will give you a call. Xavier, you are great guy and you know,”

“Please stop right there. I can’t take it. I know how you feel about Duane. I just want you to know that I still feel the same way about you,”

“I’m flattered, but we work together and I can’t,”

“I get it. I’m going to sleep here on this couch. If you need anything, just yell,”

“I will. Thanks and goodnight,”

“Goodnight,” Xavier said quietly. He had told Annette over and over how he felt about her, but this was not the place or the time.

Annette pulled back the sheets of her bed and collapsed under the covers. She thought sleep would come easily, but it didn’t. She tossed and turned for hours. She hadn’t slept in her own bed for months. She had been at Duane’s house, and the smells, surroundings and layout of her bedroom were totally different than his. Besides the logistics, she kept dreaming over and over that she was in that warehouse. She didn’t want to yell out and awaken Xavier, so she put a pillow over her face. It was awful. Her body finally took over her mind around 4:00 a.m.
