Chapter Sixteen
Griffin
I smiled when the knock on my door came at gone eight in the evening. Ben and I had visited a restaurant the previous night, my stressed-out lover managing a couple of hours without the case consuming him. Or at least heâd faked it. I assumed a few thoughts might have crept in unbeknownst to me.
At the end of the night, weâd treated each other with an old-fashioned courtesy, sharing a kiss goodnight and nothing more, and then going our separate ways. I hadnât drunk, either at the restaurant or when Iâd gotten home, the burning need for alcohol seeming to have disappeared now that Ben was back in my life. Ben would no doubt comment on it once he realized he wasnât waking with the stale taste of second-hand whiskey in his mouth.
To continue our old-fashionedâand completely unnecessary courtshipâweâd agreed to spend tonight apart, but it seemed Ben had other ideas. Hopefully, heâd brought pizza. I opened the door with a flourish. âCouldnât stay away from me, could you?â
Flynn tipped his head to one side and appraised me with a slightly raised eyebrow. âI wouldnât put it quite like that, but if you want to believe that, who am I to disabuse you of the notion?â He had a pizza box in his hands. Right food. Wrong man.
âI thought you wereâ¦â
âSomeone else. Yeah, I got that.â He lifted the pizza box in a gesture that said I might not have noticed it. âI had the night off, so I thought Iâd drop round and see if you wanted to share this with me? Itâs pepperoni,â he added with a smirk that said he didnât think Iâd be able to resist it.
Flynn pushed past me, the excuse Iâd been going to give about being tired dying on my lips. I followed him into the kitchen, my uninvited guest already helping himself to plates and fishing a sharp knife out of the cutlery drawer. âI should have known youâd be one of those men that donât own a pizza slicer.â
âWhy?â There was no keeping the slightly defensive tone out of my voice.
Flynn shrugged as he sliced the pizza and divided it up between the two plates. âI donât know.â He peered up at me from beneath his fringe. âA simple man with simple tastes, maybe. Youâre very straightforward.â
âAnd youâre not?â
He smiled like Iâd said something funny. âI own a pizza slicer.â
âMaybe you should have brought it with you.â
âMaybe I should have done.â He shoved the plate at me before taking off toward my living room and making himself comfortable on the couch. I tamped down on a feeling of disquiet as I took a seat on the other end. It was just pizza. Ben couldnât have an issue with me sharing a pizza, could he?
Flynn chewed and swallowed before fixing me with a curious stare. âWhereâve you been? I havenât seen you for a week. I rang you a couple of times, but you didnât pick up.â
âYeah, sorry.â I felt genuinely bad about it.
