Chapter Thirteen
For a shining moment, my world seemed entirely normal. Sunlight slipped through a small gap in the curtains and lazily drifted across the bed, warming the sage green comforter Iâd switched my quilt for. I stretched, wriggled, and stifled a waking yawn as I reached for my small clock. Seven AM. I still had plenty of time before I needed to open the shop. The shop! I groaned. I didn't need to open the shop today, not after posting my Closed sign on the door. In my hazy state, I forgot. The only thing on my schedule today was the speech at the museum. That wasnât until this afternoon so I had the morning to myself and I could spend it any way I wished.
I planned to spend it solving a murder.
If I could accomplish that before lunch, even better!
The problem was, where to start? Yesterday I learned that Brad was lurking around the boutique, keeping a watchful eye on me without approaching. He was the one with all the answers and he was dead! Of course, Brad wasn't the only one who knew the answers. Someone else did too. His murderer. Was he the same man who Sacha saw arguing with Brad near my shop? Or did the killer know my husband for some other reason? The possibility that they were simply strangers to each other could not be eliminated, although a random occurrence that sparked an argument might have seemed important at the time, but wasn't really. No, Sacha insisted the argument was intense. No one got so irate over something as harmless as a sidewalk bump.
I wished I could get a look at Brad's cellphone and laptop but there was no way Detective Logan would hand them over to me. Even if he did allow me the privilege, I doubted I could guess the passwords. Brad was very exacting about concealing those. It wasn't until shortly before I left that I first started to wonder what, if anything, Brad was hiding on his devices that he didn't want me to see. It could have been anything. Or maybe, nothing at all. Iâll never really know.
The hotel room and the flashdrive were both a bust but the trips to Full Blooms and the Coffee Corner Café offered some information. Except I couldnât do anything with it! It simply confirmed what I'd already suspected: Brad was watching and following me. He was also intent on mischief as Warren's sabotage findings validated. But Detective Logan never revealed an urgent need to fingerprint my bicycle. It would only prove that Brad touched it, not the person who later killed him.
So I was right back to the same question: who was the mystery man?
Pushing back the covers, I went about my morning routine, but my head still spun with crucial questions. As I poured myself a latte, one query remained foremost in my head: What happened to the murder weapon?
Brad was clutching his wound when he crashed through my door and fell onto me, but the knife was protruding from his chest.
