Survival Quest

SERI

Day 35 After the Long Sleep

As Seri flew away from Jason’s Keep, the weight in her chest eased. Gregor’s banishment had shocked everyone, but the division between powered and traditional dragons had worsened. Human history was filled with fractures and war, but dragons had always worked things out. This time she wasn’t sure.

Magic gathered in storm clouds, dark and swirling, over clusters of dragons speaking privately. Coven discontent was changing magic. It shouldn’t be possible. Magic was a natural resource, as much a part of the world as air and water. Humans had polluted the water and filled the air with smoke, but nature restored itself. Humans cast spells and performed rituals, shaping magic to their own ends, but even during the Great Wars they hadn’t changed it. Or maybe she’d never seen as clearly as she did now.

Her ability had transformed. Before the long sleep, she’d seen auras and connecting threads. But now she could see the movement of magic as clearly as she could see water flow over rocks. Each thread was distinct, no longer a haze of color.

Seri dipped in the wind, enjoying the caress of air over her wings as she flew between Brin and Ronin. Gregor and Drekan flew below them. She could do nothing about the change in magic, the tension in the coven, or Garianna’s missing eggs. For now, she could simply enjoy flying with her friends.

“Another adventure for us.” Gregor’s forced joy broke her moment of serenity.

He was trying so hard to pretend everything was normal. But it wasn’t. He’d been humiliated and banished. Every dragon felt the wound as if it had happened to them. The coven needed time to recover.

“Absolutely. We’ll find so many places to settle, dragons will thrive and rule the world.” She laughed at her own attempt to make their quest sound grand.

Ronin grunted. “You and your quests. We’re flying into the freezing cold to search for even colder homes, when we should fly out to the old keeps and restore them.” Ronin had enjoyed the southern climates. Of course he was grumpy.

Seri sent him an image of waves crashing against a cliff, with all the dragons lying in the warm sun.

He snorted. “That’s exactly what we need.”

Brin chuckled. “Wouldn’t that be lovely? But we’re headed north. Nothing but snow and ice.” She sent a montage of hunting and fires, imbuing them with comfort and camaraderie.

This wouldn’t be a hardship for her. Twenty-five-year-old Brin had lived in the Dragon Mountain Range all her life and loved it. She’d teach them how to be snow dragons.

The last member of their party kept to himself. Drekan’s power enabled him to hunt better. Since they’d left the Source, he’d spent every day hunting for the coven. Seri was surprised he’d agreed to join them.

A tingle at the back of her skull drew her gaze down to his eyes, and suddenly she could see herself. Seri blinked and her vision returned to normal.

Drekan raised an eye ridge and chuckled.

She dipped her head in respect.
