Chapter 23
Amanda Grayson woke on Tuesday morning with one thought in her throbbing, headache-filled mind.
She did not like Perkins. No, it was more than that. She despised Perkins and all the well-dressed, wealthy, egotistical Perkinses in the world who were just like him.
Amanda had not liked him since the day he strutted into the executive offices of Grumbald and Lattimer with Senator Wilton. She had stood at Grumbaldâs side and watched him get off the elevator with his arrogant, high-handed attitude in his thousand-dollar suit and shoes that were worth twice any pair of her Italian pumps. When the senior partners had called her into the conference room, she had felt like little more than a proverbial piece of meat. The most expensive cut of prime rib, no doubt, but meat none the less. Both the men had seemed much more interested in her appearance than her credentials, and that bothered her more than she wanted to admit.
Perkins had done most of the talking, and she had understood quite clearly that her job was multifaceted. Prevent any further embarrassment to the Senatorâs reputation. Minimize the financial damage. Settle the divorce with as little publicity as possible and move through the situation as quickly as feasible.
Her final task was to get Steve on a plane, train, or in a rented car as efficiently as possible and get him to Washington, D.C., to deposit him under the watchful eye of his fatherâs minions there.
It seemed simple enough on the surface, and she still did not know what had gone wrong. She couldnât imagine what she had done that caused Steve to suddenly decide to return to his wife.
The conversation in the limousine the night before had been unpleasant, to say the least. Perkins had monopolized the interrogation by questioning, poking, and prodding at her in his arrogant, demanding way in a futile attempt to find answers that she did not have. At least the aideâs ranting prevented the Senator from boiling over with his own blind accusations, but just like the situation in the offices of Grumbald and Lattimer, neither the Senator nor Perkins seemed moved by her arsenal of charms or her attempts at deflection. She was their verbal punching bag, and they made it clear that they believed she bore professional blame for what had happened to Steve Wilton, directly or indirectly.
After the brief but seemingly endless ride to her pseudo jail cell room at the Piney Woods apartment complex, Perkins informed her that he would be picking her up on Tuesday night to continue her conversation with the Senator. Or, more to the point, the Senatorâs conversation with her concerning her absolute failure to do what he had asked her to do and what repercussions she could expect for her inadequacies.
She despised both of them, and third in the line of fire was that high-handed detective who had strong-armed her into going to the airport at all. Amanda considered plotting some kind of sweet revenge on the three of them, but right now all that mattered to her was relief from a splitting headache.
