And once again in his sleep, he dreamed.

This time he walked through the Qazaluuskan Forest with Niara. Except it was winter, not summer, and the snow crunched beneath their boots. Flames curled around Niara’s staff, and she scanned the trees, her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t see it?” she said.

“See what?” said Gareth, drawing Stormshield.

The soulblade’s rage flooded his mind, filling him with its strength and power.

Creatures of dark magic were near.

Something crunched against the snow, and Gareth turned, Stormshield low at his side, his golden shield of high elven steel upon his left arm. He glimpsed a shadow darting through the forest, something blurred and dark.

“You’ve been betrayed,” said Niara.

“The jarl?” said Gareth.

Another shadow flowed through the trees.

“The what?” said Niara. “What the hell is a jarl? No. You can’t ever trust wielders of dark magic. You can’t even tolerate them. Because they will betray you.”

Red light flashed in the trees…
