CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Things were more complicated than I expected. Most importantly, it wasn’t just a doughnut store. It was a destination location for mages serious about their confections. The store had long wooden cases with glass fronts that showed off mirrored trays of perfect doughnut holes. Each had been carefully placed like pearls. White iced, chocolate covered, some topped with shaved coconut flakes, and others with the most perfect spiral zests of citrus fruit. My stomach practically crawled up my throat to pick out the doughnut holes, and I was surprised the server could hear me over the grumbling.

They recommended I get their signature shake to wash everything down. The consistency was perfect, thick but still able to come out of the straw without turning my head inside out with effort. I was in a saccharine-infused delirium as I moved in a daze toward a table by a window. Vin joined me with a plain doughnut and a cup of black coffee. He was on the Spartan diet apparently.

I ended up getting a sampler of doughnut holes in each of the two-dozen flavors then set to the serious work of evaluating and ranking each one. I would bite carefully then chew with my eyes closed to really appreciate every molecule of flavor.

I was in a serious internal debate about if bacon crumbled on a doughnut was culinary genius or a gimmicky mess when Vin interrupted my thought process by grabbing a doughnut hole and tossing it in his mouth as he did that thing where a dude grabs the chair and flips it around backwards to rest his forearms on the back of the chair.

“I would say I was wrong, but I know it would give you a big head.”

That perked me up. “Tell me what I was right about, and go into glorious details, please.”

“Bear arranged for us to meet up with Zoey in ten minutes. He asked around and found several companies that had done extensive background checks on her when she applied to their companies. She’s clean and has nothing sketchy in her background.”

“Why wasn’t she hired then?”

“One place said they almost did, but they didn’t really want to bother with training her, and the other place went with an applicant that came from a better family with more political connections in town.”

“That’s not fair.”

Vin shook his head. “Life’s not fair.” He reached for the box.

I pulled it away before he could reach any of the remaining five doughnuts.

He grimaced. “Come on,
