Chapter 14
Frisha paced around the small room. Xa had been gone for a while, and she had no idea when he would return. He had said he had a mission, but he did not say what that mission was or how long it might take to complete it. Frisha wondered what would happen if he didnât complete it. What if he had been caught? What if he had been killed? Would someone come for her? Would she have to find her way back to Cael on her own? She tried to tamp down on those thoughts. She was driving herself crazy going in circles. Staying in that room was driving her crazy, but each time she thought about going outside, she imagined Xaâs disgruntled expression. While she felt no remorse for irritating him, she knew the things he did were meant to keep her safe. It might not be safe outside. The room she was in had no windows, and she still did not know where the room was. She could not have said if she was in a city or the country, only that it had been relatively quiet.
Suddenly the door shook, and Frishaâs heart leapt. She turned to stare at it. When the locking latch slid to the side, she felt only relief. Xa had finally returned, and they could be gone from that placeâback to Cael, back to Tieran and her friends. When the door opened, though, it was not Xa who stood there. It was a woman backed by two men. The woman stood tall with dark brown hair wound atop her head and brown eyes filled with irritation. Her sour expression did not change as she sauntered into the room. She wore a long, brown skirt and yellow blouse with frills down the center. Her brown cloak with yellow silk lining swished around her as her booted feet quietly slipped over the floorboards.
âWho are you?â exclaimed Frisha when the two men followed the woman into the small room. They were both of average height and weight and had muddy brown hair and several dayâs growth on their chins. Their clothes were those of workmen and nothing about them stood out. In short, they were completely forgettable.
The woman tisked and glanced around the room. When she finally met Frishaâs gaze, she looked at her as if deciding whether she was worthy of her time. Then she tilted her head and said, âI suppose youâre doable. Youâre the right size, anyway.â
âDoable? What are you talking about, and who are you? I think youâre in the wrong place.â
The woman carefully removed her yellow silk gloves and tucked them into her skirt. âYou are Frisha Souvain-Marcum, yes?â
Frishaâs mouth hung open and her gaze darted to the two men who were moving toward her. âWait, no!â
Then their hands were on her. She struggled against them, and just as she was about to scream, one of their hands covered her mouth. She tried to bite the hand, but she was jerked roughly toward the bed.
