“The man’s a lunatic,” Frelia said in disgust. “First, he tries to create a Mortera outbreak that could have killed nearly everyone in Ivala and then he has the audacity to ask for our help? What kind of political tactic is that?”

Lily folded up the letter once more. “The same tactic applied throughout most of history,” she grumbled. “Excellence, by nature, is a minority trait. It only appears in the few and almost all political strategy relies on siding with the many and pitting your party against a smaller enemy, whether that enemy is real or not.”

“He’s attempting to make the Ashavan into the enemy! We’re going to be Dragon Guard. We’re going to serve the Ashavan.” Frelia showed more seriousness than Lily had thought her capable of.

“I know that.” Lily looked at her as if Frelia were being thick. “But I serve Ashavan Yuna. I wouldn’t fight on behalf of Ashavan Crassus or Priam either. Both are ruthless dictators that have confused peace with submission. I can’t exactly blame anyone on the other side of the Middle Sea for revolting. I’m not saying Ashavan Zant is right, just that this propaganda didn’t just post in Ivala. Talb and Alaris are getting a far larger share of these than we are, and it’s likely their affections for the Ashavan aren’t as strong as ours.”

Frelia crossed her arms frustratedly. “Then he should have left this garbage on their doorsteps and left us out of it. If he wants to try to convince people he’s an Ashavan, he should fight the other Ashavan himself. For all his critique of how the other Ashavan haven’t made any new magics, he’s not offering up anything either. Nothing other than turning people into monsters.”

“I agree.” Lily nodded. “He’s pitting the entire world against three people, and it appears he’s willing to cause one calamity after another until they’re gone. As Ivalans, we’re stuck in the middle. We’re the hole in his strategy that he needs to fill, so he couldn’t ignore us.”

“What do you mean?”

“Ashavan Zant can’t pit the impotens against the gifted. Even if war broke out between the two and the impotes win, it would be devastating to both sides. The economy would crumble without elemental magi building infrastructure. Hospitals would shut down without corporal magi, and luminous magi are the primary fighters of dragons, raptors, and everything else that makes Nocht nearly uninhabitable. The Ashavan are the only targets that remain.

“It’s easy to paint Ashavan Crassus and Priam as oppressors. It’s what they are. Ashavan Yuna on the other hand, outside of her duties as Supreme Justice, she’s avoided politics for millennia. She founded Nocht’s first, last, and only democracy. There’s little criticism Ashavan Zant can level against her, for the moment. The attack was meant to provoke us into a picking a side. He wants us to declare war against him. He needs us to.

“It’s a no-win scenario for us right now. If we stand in the way of his revolution,
