CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The handlers had begun to get more clever, feeling out and decaying structures and possessions. And they had shadow catchers helping them.

“We’re not going to be able to hide much longer. We might want to consider a way to get everyone out of here,” Neritas whispered, so close to my ear that he barely made a sound.

“How?” I asked, so worried and stressed out by the comment that I spoke louder than I intended. “If we so much as move, we will get overrun before we can get anywhere.”

I noticed that a handler and several shadow catchers were looking our way. The latter swayed and seemed to listen, much the way they had the very first time I had encountered them.

Although I couldn’t give Neritas a plan for what to do to get away, I knew he was right and there was a good chance we were going to need to try our best to get ourselves out of this situation and in the air with as many villagers as possible.

Thinking about it for a moment, I considered everything I was capable of doing. Maybe we could draw some of the monsters in and pick them off? But we were going to need to be very careful how we did it. I needed to wait for the right moment.

Not long after I thought this, the demon launched himself into the air again and flew around, back in the form I was used to seeing him in. He circled several times, coming in closer from the perimeter of his army. I waited for him to fly overhead several times before he moved on.

Eventually, he flew up higher and further away, as if something had distracted him and he wanted to go see what it was. At the same time, the handlers paused their searching and the shadow catchers acted on their own for a few seconds. I could only hope that this meant the reinforcements had arrived.

One handler immediately came our way again. I nodded to Neritas and Flick, getting Douglas to watch our back as we moved toward the area of our illusion where the handler was closest. I began to form a dark patch, not pitch black but darker than the surrounding area.

At the same time, I reached down and picked up a small rock. As the handler and the shadow catchers near it separated and the minions set to attacking one of the dwellings further away, I dropped the rock.

It bounced and skittered across the ground, drawing the handler’s attention. The creature raced toward us, coming partially into the illusion. As soon as it did, I extended the illusion bubble and made the area pitch black so it couldn’t see us. Neritas, Flick, and I sprang into action, stabbing at it while I kept it wrapped in darkness.

The creature let out a couple of screeches and flailed about, drawing some more attention our way, but we killed it quickly while it was handicapped, already tired from doing its master’s bidding.
