Amazingly, the boisterous team had finally settled down, unless I counted the soft chewing and appreciative murmurs, not to mention the compliment or exclamation that would pop out from the team members’ mouths every now and again. My heart pounded as I watched the whole event unravel, both nervous and a little smugly satisfied about how everyone was reacting to my and Becks’ cooking. It was hard not to dwell on what could have happened if they didn’t receive my pies well.

I had the whole collection of Bouclier’s strongest and fiercest sitting together on one boulder, and I’m sure if they wanted to, they could even pick up their giant perch and hurl it on me if they were in a mean enough mood. So far, though, they had all surpassed my expectations about competitive athletes and were way more polite than I guessed they would be. Maybe I was biased because of how cutthroat the football team had been at my high school. I had to wonder, though, were they all really this tolerant of a couple of low-status mages, or were they just playing nice because we brought them some food that was several steps above the slop they were just complaining about?

Even though they probably wanted to inhale my pies based on how hungry and ecstatic they looked eating them, they truly took time to savor them, knowing that they were limited to one each. I didn’t want them to blow their practice on account of stomach cramps. That just seemed like a way for everyone to suffer, and Nate would be pissed at me. Finally, everyone had gotten to the end of their meal, down to the very last crumb. I even saw several of the teammates licking their fingers to cling onto the last traces of the pie before they had to get down to business.

After the dreamy look had faded from their faces, they were able to come back to their senses and speak again. Faelyn was the first to compliment Becks and me for our service, nodding at us with a gracious smile.

“That was fantastic, ladies,” she purred, biting her lip as though she was trying to relive the meal all over again. “You really ought to come over and do it more often.”

“Yeah!” another teammate with a brawny build, bright red skin, and yellow markings that looked like tribal tattoos seconded her opinion. “I never want to go back to that hogwash from before! I’ll put up a fight if I have to!”

Nate smirked anxiously, and I wondered what was up with him. He looked like he had some bad news to break to the rest of the team. He tilted his head down and examined his open palms, and I guessed that maybe he was expecting some huge transformation after eating our pies. I mean, I understood that we could technically work magic, but he couldn’t exactly ask for the moon and stars from us. Becks and I were just getting the hang of feeding people for such an important task.
