Chapter Fifteen
Fes couldnât take his eyes off Theole. How long had it been since heâd seen the other man? He looked⦠Well. Certainly not dead, not as Fes had been led to believe. Theole had the same graying hair and dark eyes, though there was anger in them now that hadnât been there when heâd seen him last.
Why would they have convinced him that Theole was gone? What purpose would there have been in allowing Fesâor anyone elseâto believe that?
Fes could think of one reason: the Damhur attack.
He glanced over at Indra. She stared at her father, her eyes blank. There was something here that Fes wasnât understanding, and he thought that he needed to get a better handle on it, but how? If Theole were involved, it would explain why Indra was unableâand unwillingâto help.
âWhat are you doing here?â he asked Theole.
Theole cocked his head, shifting his Calling so that the totems maneuvered in front of Fes. He was aware of the Calling in a way that he hadnât been the last time heâd been around Theole. He felt the pressure of the Calling, the way that it pushed out from the man, surging toward the totems. A part of the Calling rolled over Fes, but not nearly with as much power as what struck the totems.
âYou are in Toulen. I would ask you the same thing.â
âI came to look after your daughter.â
âMy daughter is perfectly safe.â
Fes shook his head. âIf she was safe, then why does she seem terrified?â
âMy daughter had grown far too fond of you.â
âBecause you had me watch over her. What did you expect would happen?â
âI thought that she would gain an understanding of her abilities. Her dragon blessing allowed her the opportunity to Call to you.â
Fes swallowed. Had Indra attempted to Call him before, he had little doubt that she would have been successful. He would have had no way of resisting. When he had traveled with Indra, he had very little understanding of his Deshazl abilities. As it was, he still didnât have much understanding.
âMaybe you raised her better than that.â
The totems shifted, beginning to march toward him. They came slowly, moving at him steadily, and Fes tried to ignore their onward march, but the totems were enormous, and he could practically feel the power coming off them.
He swiped at the nearest totem with his sword, and the blade clattered off the stone harmlessly, sending sparks into the night.
âJayell, is there anything that you can do?â he asked.
Jayell attempted a spell and shifted her attention to the ground, but the totems stepped over it.
She shook her head. âI⦠I donât think there is. Itâs almost as if they anticipated this.â
âYou wonât be able to win,â Indra said.
Fes glanced over at her. Surprisingly, she seemed upset by the possibility of something happening to him.
Could he have read it wrong? Could she still care about him?
âHelp me, Indra,â he said.
Indra looked beyond the line of totems. For a moment, he felt a fluttering of a Calling, but it wasnât nearly as powerful as what he felt emanating from Theole.
