Chapter Eleven
The fifth vow: Find and question Maalik about his lies.
Azrael knelt on scorched earth, watching as the last of the smoke sucked into the jewel. The moment there was none, he clipped a metal cage around it and uttered a word of magic. The dangerous amulet glowed and warmed before settling down. His fingers protected by gloves, he grabbed it by the thick linked chain, dangling it away from his body.
âI canât believe we did it.â Nikail approached, too tired to swagger. âAnd weâre sure that was the last one of them?â
âThe last of any consequence. This is the seventh and final prison.â Azrael dumped the amulet into a leather pouch then placed it inside a chainmail sack.
âNow we just need to hide it, and weâll be done. Finally. Itâs been a long time coming.â Nikail managed a grin through the grime coating his face.
âThat was a hard-fought battle.â Another man, sporting a trimmed beard and a gash through his shirt, which showed a flat stomach streaked with a red line, approached.
âRidwan,â Azrael said in salutation âDid we all make it?â
âYeah. Maalik is puking though. The Shaitan managed to hit him with some kind of spell before we managed to contain it.â
Azrael glanced down at the bag in his hand. âNow that theyâre trapped, hopefully things can go back to normal.â
âDrinking, wenching, and doing very stupid things.â Ridwan grinned.
âThe stupidest,â Nikail agreed. His face sobered. âI canât believe we did it.â
âDonât celebrate yet.â Maalik arrived, looking pale but determined.
âWhy not? Once this is buried and forgotten, itâs done. No more Shaitan, no more Iblis. We won,â Ridwan insisted.
But the expression on Maalikâs face⦠It didnât bode well.
Damn. A word that didnât truly convey what he felt in that moment.
Maalik appeared sick but determined. âIt is only a temporary victory. The Shaitan will return.â
âA problem for another generation,â Ridwan declared. âWe did our part. Saved the world.â
âYou only delayed the inevitable. Those prisons wonât hold them for forever. I saw it. Saw what happens when they return. Rivers of blood. Screams of the innocent.â Maalikâs eyes stared off, haunted by what heâd seen. Not the first vision heâd suffered.
âHow long before they escape?â Ridwan asked.
âNot for a while,â Maalik admitted.
âMeaning we might be long gone. Someone else will have to fight them,â Nikail pointed out.
Maalik shook his head. âThe generation that will eventually face the Shaitan will fail without our help. They wonât have magic.â
âHow can they have no magic?â Azrael exclaimed, finally interjecting himself.
âThe world moves on. Some things go extinct. When the Shaitan return, no one will know how to stop them.â
âMeaning the Iblis will come.â Nikail ducked his head. âAll weâve done is for nothing. Weâve only delayed the destruction.â
âThere is a way to ensure that doesnât happen,â Maalik said.
Azrael stiffened âYouâve got a plan?â
Maalik nodded. âThere is a way to ensure there are people to fight the Shaitan and teach a future generation how to use magic. All we have to do is bind ourselves to the spell holding the Shaitan in their prisons.
