Chapter 11

I tried to move away from them both.

“I’m so sorry, Wels.”

Wels looked completely floored, but Billy had satisfaction written all over his face.

“Not in a million years will I believe that you are worthy of her. Look at you!”

Wels started to back up as his eyes darted between the both of us.

I closed the gap. “Wels, don’t go.”

He put his hands up to avoid me touching him.

“No, you two seem like you really need to talk. I’ll leave you to it.”

“But I want to talk to you; I want to explain what happened.”

“You had months’ worth of chances to explain yourself and you didn’t. Clearly, there was a reason for that. Excuse me.”

He barged away so quickly, I couldn’t catch up with him in my stupid dress. Instead I rushed over to Gwen and drew her away from Evans, hurrying her to a private spot as she squealed; my fingers were intentionally digging into her skin. She continued to squeal but I didn’t care.

“What the hell, Jade?”

I released her when we finally stepped outside.

“I told you specifically not to say a word to Billy until I’d sorted myself out.”

Gwen wilted like a flower in winter and backed away from me.

“I’m so sorry; I just couldn’t watch him continuing to be so hard on himself when he has a small chance of turning things around.”

“No, you just couldn’t stop yourself from being a tattletale. Goddamn it, Gwen! I counted on you this one time. I wanted you to come through for me.”

Gwen eyed me suspiciously. “What’s the big deal anyway?”

I chuckled sarcastically, pacing around angrily.

“The big deal? The big deal, my friend, is that your brother is in love with me, and Billy has just shown up and said things that have broken his heart. This is all just a giant mess.”

I turned away from her, but Gwen pursued me. She looked astounded by what I had just said and for the first time since I had known her, Gwen opened her mouth to talk but words eluded her, so she shut her lips and tried again and again.

“I’m speechless. I don’t know what to say.”

“I can see that.” I chuckled at her.

“I obviously didn’t want to hurt my brother and I didn’t realise he had the hots for you so badly. I know I said it would be great if you dated my brother, but you don’t look at him at all in the same way you do at Billy. I just wanted to make things easier for you because I care about you as my best friend, and I didn’t anticipate that Billy would make such a scene about it. Please forgive me.”

I hugged her. I could never be angry with her for long. I knew she meant well for me. I just didn’t know what to do now that she had messed up my life. I supposed the deed had already been done and now I had to focus on just trying to clean up the mess.

“I’m sorry that I called you a tattletale; I was really angry.
