A Story of Vaccinosis
Vaccinosis is the term used for illness following vaccination. The way it shows up varies, though some common forms are more easily recognized. The term vaccinosis, however, refers in general to any health problem following vaccine use.
Here is a typical story about a family that adopted a young dog at age 8 weeks, a puppy that seemed normal in all respects.1 As recounted by Ruth Downing in Dogs Monthly magazine, they experienced the puppy as “a fast learner, very bright,” and he was house-trained in 3 days.
At ages 8 and 10 weeks, they took the puppy into their veterinarian’s office for examination and vaccination. After the second set of vaccines, at 10 weeks, things changed. A few days after, he became restless and, when Ruth reached down to stroke him, he snapped at her hand. This was a marked change—unfortunately, the beginning of many more. By the time he reached 6 months of age, according to Ruth, “he’d suddenly become very vocal, hyperactive, and didn’t seem to want to concentrate for any length of time. He also developed an ear infection, which was to recur throughout his life.” [Note: What is here being called an “ear infection” was not really an infection, but an autoimmune condition deriving from use of the vaccine. See the topic Ear Problems.]
This behavior, stemming from the time of the second puppy vaccinations, was put down to “a behavior problem,” which of course explained nothing. In an attempt to moderate his behavior, they had the puppy neutered, which had no beneficial effect on his behavior. When he was then given his first annual booster vaccinations, “he became even more hyperactive. He would grab at sleeves and mouth people’s arms and refuse to sit quietly when people came over to the house.”
His people turned to consulting animal behaviorists and trainers, “most of which were of the opinion that we just had a dominant dog who needed to be put in his place.” Following the advice of the behaviorists, they tried dominating him, which just made things worse—“he did not understand why his family appeared to turn against him, using the ‘strong arm’ methods advised . . .” He became worse, “mistrusting and possessive of everything he considered his—from his toys to his bed, and even his space in the car, growling and nervously looking around if anyone came too close. This warning from him was met with disdain by us, and he was shouted at to stop it each time he did it. The end result of this was that he quickly learned that growling got him into trouble so he stopped, but then used the only self-protection open to him if he felt threatened—and that was to bite.”
By this time family members were afraid of his behavior and delayed going to their veterinarian. When they finally screwed up their courage and took him, the vet said he was overdue on his vaccinations and he would have to start “the full vaccination program again.
