CHAPTER 12
He spent some time going through Reesâs files to see if there was any other reference to the Sinclair estate and then got a call from Tollis.
âJamiesonâs here and heâd like to talk to you,â he said drily.
âIâll be right down.â
Tollis was behind his desk, looking bad-tempered, and the policeman was sitting in a hard-backed chair to one side, looking inscrutable.
âMr Leith,â the Inspector said as if heâd been waiting patiently, âI thought it would be more convenient to have a chat here rather than ask you to come to the police station.â He shifted round in the chair as John pulled another forward. The policeman was in a well-cut dark blue suit; he looked relaxed, but his eyes were alert. âWe havenât picked up those two men yet but we should find them soon. Maybe you could look at some photographs and see if you can pick them out.â
He spread a dozen photos on the desk and John moved closer. He saw one of the men straight away. âHim,â he said. He studied the rest but he had never really seen the second man for any length of time. âNot the other one, Iâm afraid.â
âThatâs fine.â Jamieson gathered the prints up without telling him if heâd picked out a Grey. âThereâs not much other progress to reportâmy colleagues in the Lanark force tell me that you sister has had some trouble too. Quite an epidemic, isnât it?â
âDid they leave fingerprints. Can you arrest them?â
âNo prints. Theyâre not very bright but they do know to wear gloves. I really wanted to talk to your uncle but it can wait.â Jamieson said that in a preoccupied tone of voice and then he brightened. âBut Tollis has explained that you donât work for this firm, so that opens a whole new angle, doesnât it? You are the target and not this company. Thatâs not a comfortable situation to be in but it will sort itself out.â
John said nothing and he had the feeling that the policeman didnât expect him to reply.
Jamieson had turned back to Tollis and he spoke more briskly. âBut a missing man wonât. The trouble is that we donât know where to start lookingâthatâs your problem too, I take it?â
Tollis gave a very brief nod but said nothing and Jamieson got to his feet. He didnât have Tollisâs bulk or height and he moved like a cat, turning on the balls of his feet to face John. âSo itâs patience on both counts and Iâm really looking forward to the next episode in yours. You do realize that there will be one?â His eyes sparkled with genuine amusement, but John didnât find it funny.
Jamieson walked to the door, buttoning his overcoat, tucking his scarf neatly inside it. âWatch your back, Mr Leith, and weâll do our utmost to find the elusive Grey brothers,â he said as he left.
Tollis was out of his chair quicker than John had seen him move before. The big man stopped at the door and glared at it as if to send some message to Jamiesonâs back.
