Chapter Eleven

“Do you want to talk about it?” Caleb asked, sometime past dawn when she was lying against him, her head resting on his chest.

“Talk about what?” Faith asked, brain thoroughly melted by excellent orgasms and lack of sleep. She’d been half-dozing, lulled by the sound of the ocean drifting through the window and the steady thump of Caleb’s heartbeat beneath her ear.

“Whatever it was that brought you to my doorstep wanting vodka and, well, this.”

Her pleasant fog started to disperse a little. Dislike. She didn’t want to think about reality. “Are you complaining?”

He chuckled, the noise vibrating through the side of her head. “Do I look like I’m complaining?”

She twisted onto her stomach, so she could prop herself up to study him. Lounging against the pillows, sleepy eyed and satisfied, she couldn’t say that he looked upset about how the night had turned out.

“No,” she said. “Which is just as well,” she added, with a smile. “I put a lot of effort into last night.”

“I remember. I appreciate it.” One of his hands skimmed over her shoulder, his thumb moving slowly to the topmost point of her tattoos. “I like these.” His hand moved lower. “All these little musical notes floating down your back. And the other ones.”

She shivered despite herself, remembering how he’d used his mouth on every part of her marked by ink, then batted the memory away. He’d done some marking of his own. She was pleasurably sore in quite a few places. “You cannot possibly be ready for round…” She paused. “Okay, I’ve lost track. But more than you can possibly be ready for.” Indeed she was feeling the effects of hours wrapped around Caleb. Muscles were not the only part of her feeling slightly tender this morning.

“You know, some men would take that as a challenge.”

“Oh god, don’t tell me I’ve awakened your competitive spirit.”

“Nope. You’ve worn me out. For now. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like touching you still.”

She ignored the “for now” part. That implied there was going to be another night. She hadn’t yet decided if she was ready for that. The night had been hot and wild, yes. Caleb knew exactly what he was doing with every inch of his body. But somewhere in the early hours, somehow, each time they’d reached for each other again, hot and wild had turned a little more … something else. Something slower. Something more … intense. Intense meant emotion. Something she didn’t want to get caught up in.

This was a festival fling.

She’d thought she’d been clear enough but now she wanted to make sure Caleb wasn’t going to get the wrong idea. Awkward.

“Are you ignoring my question on purpose?” Caleb asked.

Dammit. The man had a mind like a steel trap. She’d gone off on a lust-fogged, sleep-deprived tangent and he was still on target, sitting there waiting for the answer to whatever he’d asked her to begin with. What was that again? Something about talking about why she’d turned up on his doorstep.
